Now’s Your Chance: Repo’d Nissan GT-R up for auction

Filed under Nissan, Sports/GTs, Super Cars 08-05-2009

Here’s your chance to put Godzilla in your driveway for a discount! Of course, this GT-R that’s headed for the block at Matley’s Richmond Auto Auction today in Virginia will likely not go for much of a discount. Barring a transmission that’s been launch-controlled into oblivion, this 3,011-mile repo-special appears virtually showroom-fresh. Carfax says this car is a clean, one-owner affair, and the auction company hasn’t put it in the “inoperative vehicle” group, so we’re guessing it’s another case of financial over-reach brought back down to reality. If it were us, we’d be hiding this thing in a garage more secret and secure than Dick Cheney’s undisclosed location while we sold an organ or two on the black market to pay its bills. You’ve got a spare kidney, but it’s not like the GTR comes along every day. If you’ve actually got the finances to purchase a GT-R and think this one may be a bargain, you’ll have to move fast – the auction is today. As long as you can make one or two payments before you start selling off pieces of yourself, you’ll be fine. This tip comes to us from our friends at Hemmings, who also hooked us up with the Carfax, posted after the jump. Thanks David!

All Torque, No Action: Audi reportedly cancels R8 TDI

Filed under Audi, Super Cars 07-05-2009

If anyone could have done a diesel supercar, it would have been Audi. After achieving utter domination in Le Mans racing with its R10 TDI, the German automaker unveiled two successive turbodiesel concept versions of the R8 supercar at the Detroit show and then at the Geneva salon in 2008. But after whetting our appetites for an oil-burning supercar with instant power delivery and endless reserves of torque, Audi has reportedly canceled development of its R8 TDI program.

Apparently, the R8 was not originally designed to accommodate the company’s enormous V12 turbodiesel engine, and re-engineering the car was proving far too costly for Audi to justify under these financial circumstances, especially when the American market, which accounts for 1/3rd of R8 sales, is marred by diesel prices that are higher than gas. Fortunately Audi’s already given us the 5.2-liter V10 FSI and has the convertible version in the works, but a diesel R8 just isn’t in the cards.

Save the Cheerleader? GM creates Hero Edition Corvette ZR1 to benefit Kids Wish Network

Filed under Chevrolet, Others, Sports/GTs, Super Cars 07-05-2009

Want to be a hero? Or, do you at least want to drive a heroic car? May we suggest the 1 of 1 Hero Edition 2009 Corvette ZR1 that General Motors has created specifically for the Kids Wish Network. There may not be any changes to the stock ZR1′s drivetrain, but that’s fine – it certainly didn’t need any.

To separate the Hero Edition from the rest of its ZR1 siblings, GM’s team of Corvette designers and engineers equipped this particular ‘Vette with a bespoke graphics package with red accents in lieu of the normal blue. Other special bits include “additional carbon fiber components,” though we’re left wondering what those composite pieces may be.

You can’t actually go to your nearest Chevy dealership and order the Hero Edition, as it’s a prize for the Corvette Dream Giveaway. Joining the 2009 Hero Edition ZR1 will be a fully restored 1967 Corvette in matching Tuxedo Black with red highlights, equipped with the desirable 427 cubic inch Big Block V8 engine with 390 ground-pounding horsepower.

There’s only one 2009 Hero Edition in existence, and if you want it, you’ll need to order a $3 ticket… or, ya know, a few hundred tickets. There’s no limit on how many times a single individual can enter the drawing, and the more tickets you purchase, the better your chances of winning will be. Shelley Breiner, Exective Director for the Kids Wish Network, expects this lone drawing to fund its Hero of the Month program for at least an entire year. So, order away – it’s for a good cause. Thanks for the tip, Keith!

GM CEO says future of Corvette secure

Filed under Chevrolet, Sports/GTs, Super Cars 06-05-2009

According to Fritz Henderson, the recently-appointed CEO of General Motors, the future holds exciting things for Chevrolet’s iconic sportscar. This news comes despite the admission late last year that development of the next-gen C7 Corvette platform was put on “indefinite hold, with no official or set timetable.”

In a bit of good news for Corvette fans, Henderson asserts that the “Corvette pays its rent,” meaning that it’s a money-making operation for The General. Obviously, the longer the automaker can rely on the current C6 architecture, the more profitable it will likely be.

There’s still no indication of when we’ll see a new architecture underpinning the Corvette, but Henderson is quick to point out that the current C6 chassis is still an excellent unit to build off and one that’s fully competitive with the best sportscars from around the world. Disagree? You’ve obviously never gotten behind the wheel of the latest ZR1.

How much is that Veyron in the Window? Unique Pegaso edition Bugatti for sale

Filed under Bugatti, Others, Super Cars 24-04-2009

It’s hard to believe that Bugatti is still pumping out more special editions of its already special Veyron when owners of some of the most exclusive versions to date have been going up for sale on what seems like a daily basis. A couple of weeks ago, we reported on one of the five Pur Sang editions being put up for sale in Abu Dhabi, and our man Jared Paul Stern over at sister-site Luxist found another one a few days later. But as exclusive as the Pur Sang edition was, an even more exclusive Veyron has now popped up on the market on a Polish website.

The Pegaso edition was a one-off built for one fortunate Eastern European customer living in Dubai (where else) at the exclusive Burj al Arab complex. It was painted a special pearl white and light red metallic with a custom interior bearing the Pegaso badge in tribute to the 1950′s-era Spanish coachbuilder. We guess times are tight for everyone if the owner is motivated to sell, but then again, at €1.85 ($2.45M USD), the offering party is asking for a considerable premium over the standard million-€uro price of a new model for this barber pole Bug. Hat tip to everyone!

SMS Supercars previews 460 and 460X Mustangs

Filed under Coupes, Others, Sports/GTs, Super Cars, Tuners 20-04-2009

If you build it they will come. At least that’s what Steve Saleen is hoping, and with his recent announcement regarding Saleen, Inc’s warranties, we’re guessing many of his loyal customers will indeed come with money in hand to buy his new tricked-out ponycar. Not that people will buy the car based on reputation alone – SMS has made sure that its 460 Mustang has the proper credentials of a Steve Saleen creation. The exterior gets a full makeover including a new front fascia, Red Butterfly Air Induction hood, side splitters, rear fascia, and rear wing complemented by 20-inch, 5-spoke wheels. Two variants are available, a 460 Mustang and a 460X Mustang. The first features a 4.6L supercharged V8 putting out 470 horsepower mated to a 5-speed manual while the latter sports a 5.0L supercharged V8 producing 655 horsepower routed through a 6-speed manual. Both also feature several suspension upgrades including a new watts-linkage system and upgraded front and rear brakes. Follow the jump for more details in the press release from SMS.

PRESS RELEASE

Steve Saleen ponies up, celebrates 25 years in the business and 45 years of Mustangs with 2010 SMS 460 Mustang

Orange County, California. (April 17, 2009) Steve Saleen, his name being synonymous with fast Mustangs, would not be Steve if he kept his hands off Ford’s newest pony. On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the launch of the original Mustang in 1964, and in reflection on his 25 year association with America’s iconic sports car, Steve celebrates with Mustang aficionados from around the world in launching first sketches of the 2010 SMS 460 and SMS 460X Mustangs at the 45th Anniversary Celebrations in Birmingham, Alabama.

Instantly recognizable as Steve Saleen’s work, the new SMS 460 Mustangs feature a host of visual and technical highlights that set them apart from the crowd. “I previewed many of the features of my newest Mustang with the 25th anniversary car I showed last year,” says SMS Supercars CEO and President Steve Saleen.

The front fascia treatment, the SMS Red Butterfly Air Induction HoodTM, the front and side splitters, the rear fascia and diffuser with the high down-force rear wing showed the way Steve Saleen is looking at Mustangs today. “You have to go with the times. While the Mustang remains an icon, Ford has done a very good job with the 2010 model. I wanted to interpret it using my signature to create the latest Steve Saleen version of this American favorite.”

The SMS 460 Mustang offers a 4.6 liter V8 engine featuring a minimum 470 hp and 427 ft-lb of torque, while the even more powerful SMS 460X Mustang engine with all new internal and headwork delivers 655 hp and 600 ft-lb out of the enlarged 5.0 liter V8. Both use the new (patent pending) SMS 296 Supercharger presented last week at the New York International Auto Show. Transmission options are a 5-speed automatic or 5-speed manual on the 460 or a 6-speed SMST manual on the top of the line 460X.

Performance for both cars is expectedly striking. The 460 Mustang accelerates from 0 to 60 in the low 4 seconds, while the 460X manages the same in the lower 4′s. In addition to engine output, handling, roadholding and braking play an equally important role. The 2010 SMS 460 Mustangs feature Steve’s signature Watt’s linkage suspension with all-new geometry. New SMS brakes front and rear deliver impressive stopping power to match the jaw-dropping performance.

The interior with all-new Alcantara and leather SMS performance seats features the patented Signature Series chevron stripes. Dash and interior panels are covered in hand-stitched high-quality leather. Multiple seat chevron and SMS unique exterior colors are available.

More details about Steve Saleen’s latest Mustang will be revealed in the spring of 2009, deliveries are expected to start mid-summer. Customers interested in buying a SMS 460 and SMS 460X Mustang can either contact SMS Supercars directly at www.smssupercars.com or by calling (714) 400 2121.

Super-rare Supercar: Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang for sale in Abu Dhabi

Filed under Bugatti, Super Cars 15-04-2009

When Bugatti rolled out the limited-edition Pur Sang edition of its Veyron at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, European customers snapped up all five before any American buyers could get their checkbooks out. As a result, Bugatti had to make the Sang Noir the following year and offer U.S. customers first crack at the limited run of fifteen. But for those who really wanted the original polished-aluminum and bare-carbon-fiber edition that kicked off the raft of special-edition Veyrons that followed, they may get that chance as one appears to have popped up for sale.

A premium car dealership in Abu Dhabi has posted an example of the Pur Sang for sale on its website. In all likelihood, this is the same example that was spotted on video a year ago and which showed up for the Top Gear photo shoot in good company a few months later. No word on price, or even confirmation that this is, indeed, a Pur Sang, but the website does allow you to place the order immediately. And if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, they’ve got a Mansory Vincero up for grabs, too. Follow the link to check it out.
