Report: NHTSA looking at 2009 VW Jetta stalling issues

Arquivado em Sedans/Saloons, Volkswagen por admin em 31-08-2010

It’s only taken seven filed complaints out of 37,889 vehicles sold, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is taking a close look at the 2009 VW Jetta TDi regarding sudden stalling. Although only a handful of complaints have come into the NHTSA, a greater number of owners in various forums like VW Vortex, TDIclub.com, and VWDiesel.net have reported the same thing: a loss of power and then the engine cuts out.

Suspicions seem to center on the fuel delivery system or the type of diesel used at the moment. Tales of $10,000 repair estimates have been related, but it’s too early to say where the gremlins truly reside, so if you’ve experienced the issue yourself, get on the horn to NHTSA.

2011 Infiniti G25 arrives Stateside, priced at $30,950

Arquivado em Infiniti, Sedans/Saloons por admin em 13-08-2010

The Infiniti line-up is set to expand this September with the introduction of the G25, a new entry-level sedan packing all the amenities of its bigger brother, but with less power and a budget-minded price tag.

By all outward appearances, the G25 is your standard G sedan with a new badge, but under the hood lies the same 2.5-liter V6 that’s been available in Japan since 2008. For an MSRP of $30,950, the G25 packs 218 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque channeled through a standard seven-speed automatic gearbox and – depending on the trim – can be had in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The standard G25, G25 Journey or G25x (AWD) come equipped with leather and power-adjustable seats, automatic climate control, six-speaker audio, 17-inch aluminum wheels, HID Xenon headlamps and the normal array of electo-nannies. An optional RearView monitor and dual-zone temperature control, along with heated front seats and outside mirrors, are available on the Journey.

All told, a completely maxed out G25 will set you back about the same amount of coin as a bone-stock G37 sedan – not a bad deal considering everything that’s included. Hit the jump for the full details and expect driving impressions late next month.

Infiniti G25 Sedan To Make U.S. Debut at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

– New 2.5-liter V6-Equipped G Sedan Priced at Under $31,000 M.S.R.P. USD –

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Aug. 13, 2010) – Infiniti today announced a new addition to the popular Infiniti G Line, the G25 Sedan, which features a 2.5-liter V6 engine. It is scheduled to go on sale at Infiniti retailers nationwide in September, joining the Infiniti G37 Sedan, G37 Coupe and G37 Convertible. It will have a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price* (MSRP) of $30,950 USD.

“With the new G25 Sedan, we’re broadening the appeal of the G Line with a model designed to provide an additional choice for buyers looking for a true luxury sedan, but who might not need the higher levels of performance provided by our larger engine-equipped G37 models,” said Infiniti Vice President Ben Poore, speaking at a media event at the 60th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. “The G25 is positioned in the heart of the luxury sport sedan market, allowing us to bring Infiniti’s Inspired Performance to a wider selection of buyers.”

The new 2011 Infiniti G25 Sedan shares the same dynamic exterior, interior and chassis as the G37, but with a smaller displacement engine. The 2.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 produces 218 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque, versus the G37’s 3.7-liter DOHC 24-valve V6’s 328 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. The G25 Sedan comes with a standard 7-speed automatic transmission and is available in both rear-wheel drive and intelligent all-wheel drive. Three models are offered: G25 Sedan, G25 Sedan Journey and G25x Sedan AWD.

The G25 Sedan’s extensive list of standard equipment includes leather-appointed seating, Shodo aluminum interior trim, 8-way power driver’s seat and 4-way power front passenger’s seat, Automatic Temperature Control, premium audio system with six speakers, XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately) and much more.
Other standard features range from 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights, 4-wheel Anti-lock Disc Braking System (ABS), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and Traction Control System (TCS).

The G25 Journey model adds RearView Monitor, heated front seats, heated outside mirrors, auto on/off headlights, Dual Zone Automatic Temperature Control and more.

“While the G25 Sedan serves as the entry into the G line, it still offers an impressive array of luxury features – from leather-appointed seats to satellite radio,” said Poore. “With inspired style and performance – backed by our unique customer care philosophy, the Infiniti Total Ownership Experience® – we are confident the new G25 will attract a lot of attention in the marketplace.”

Novitec Tridente supercharges the Maserati Quattroporte

Arquivado em Maserati, Sedans/Saloons por admin em 06-08-2010

Used to be – not so long ago, even – that if you wanted something exotic and sporty with four doors, your choices were largely limited to the Maserati Quattroporte. Maybe the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, if your budget and tastes veered more towards the statesmanly. But these days, buyers have more choices in the form of the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and even the Jaguar XJ Supercharged. And while Maserati reportedly has a pair of new QPs in the works, for those still enamored with the current model but hoping for a little extra kick, Novitec Tridente has something in store for you.

Novitec who, you ask? The Dutch tuning firm massages all manner of Italian automobiles – like the Alfa 159 and Fiat 500, for example – under its unadorned name, but may be more familiar to exotic car aficionados under the Novitec Rosso label, the division that tunes Ferrari models. A couple of years ago, the company launched a unit dedicated to tuning Maseratis, and these are its latest releases.

The upgrade package can be fitted to either the Quattroporte S or the top-of-the-line Quattroporte GT S, bolting a supercharger, intercooler, new intake manifold and fuel injectors and a remapped ECU to the 4.7-liter V8 to boost output up to 590 horsepower, a stout 160 and 150-horse boost over stock, respectively. A new, electronically adjustable sport suspension is also fitted with 21-inch modular wheels and Pirelli P Zero rubber, along with some discreet aero bits and a variety of interior upgrade options. The result? Try 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds and a 183 mph top tend. Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the high-res image gallery below.

NOVITEC TRIDENTE Tunes the Maserati Quattroporte

590 hp / 434 kW and 572 Nm Through Compressor Technology

Superior performance through NOVITEC TRIDENTE Compressor Technology: With a rated power output of 590 hp / 434 kW and a peak torque of 572 Nm NOVITEC TRIDENTE establishes the two Maserati models Quattroporte S and Sport GT S among the most powerful luxury sedans in the world. Additionally the tuner enhances the cars’ appearance and driving dynamics with three-piece 21-inch wheels, a height-adjustable coil-over suspension and a carbon-fiber rear spoiler. Exclusive interior upgrades are yet another NOVITEC TRIDENTE specialty.

Superlative driving thanks to superior engine power combined with exceptional engine smoothness: That is the philosophy behind the new NOVITEC TRIDENTE SPORT compressor engine for the Maserati luxury sedans Quattroporte S and Quattroporte Sport GT S.

The specialists of the German company adapted a cogged-belt-driven mechanical charger to the 4.7-liter eight-cylinder four-valve engine. Maximum boost pressure is limited to 0.35 bar. A water-to-air intercooler with dedicated water circulation ensures healthy operating temperatures for the engine. The NOVITEC TRIDENTE SPORT compressor conversion is rounded out by a custom intake manifold and larger injectors. Newly calibrated engine electronics ensure optimal power yield, longevity and compliance with strict Euro IV emission limits.

After the engine conversion, which starts at 19,900 Euros, the Italian luxury sedan delivers high-end performance figures: Rated power output of the Quattroporte S jumps from standard 430 hp / 318 kW to 590 hp / 434 kW at 7,300 rpm. Simultaneously peak torque grows from 490 Nm to 572 Nm.

In combination with the six-speed automatic transmission the NOVITEC TRIDENTE luxury sedan delivers excellent driving performance as well: A sprint time of just 4.6 seconds from rest to 100 km/h and 14.9 seconds to 200 km/h are truly exceptional in this class. Just as impressive is the car’s new top speed of 295 km/h.

To transfer this tremendous performance potential to the road as safely as possible NOVITEC TRIDENTE have developed a custom-tailored tire/wheel combination for the Quattroporte. The three-piece alloy wheels with five double spokes perfectly fill out the available space in the wheel wells. The size 9Jx21 wheels on the front axle are mounted with Pirelli P Zero high-performance tires in size 255/30 ZR 21. In the rear size 295/30 ZR 21 tires on size 11Jx21 wheels provide optimal traction.

The new wheels play a large part in the sporty yet elegant appearance of the upgraded luxury sedan. For added sporty emphasis NOVITEC TRIDENTE offers an understated rear spoiler made from clear-coated carbon fiber.

The NOVITEC TRIDENTE sport suspension is specifically calibrated to the 21-inch high-performance tires. It allows owners of the Quattroporte to dial-in a setup that suits their individual preferences. The suspension is continuously height-adjustable and features multiple settings for compression and rebound.

NOVITEC TRIDENTE also offers numerous options for a stylish customization of the interior of the luxury sedan. The options range from a custom-tailored interior crafted from the finest leather or Alcantara to a state-of-the-art multimedia equipment package with TV, Blu-Ray player and high-speed internet connection on wheels.a

Audi confirms A7 Sportback global reveal for Monday

Arquivado em Audi, Others, Sedans/Saloons por admin em 21-07-2010

The long-awaited production version of the Audi A7 will finally debut on Monday, July 26 at 8:30pm CET – that’s 2:30pm Eastern – and you’ll be able to watch live on the interwebs at Audi TV. interestingly, Audi has chosen to head over to the hometown of one of its primary rivals for the unveiling. The A7 will be unwrapped at the Pinakothek der Moderne art museum in Munich, just a couple of miles from the world headquarters of BMW.

The A7 is expected to take the form of a large, five-door fastback built on the modular platform shared with the A8 sedan. The styling is expected to be very close to the Sportback concept that we saw at last year’s Detroit Auto Show. Unlike BMW’s 5 Series Gran Turismo, the A7 doesn’t have the elevated roofline that adds passenger volume, so it’s likely to be tighter inside, but it’s also likely to avoid the 5GT’s ungainly appearance.

First Drive: 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX fills out with big bro’s wide body

Arquivado em Sedans/Saloons, Subaru por admin em 19-07-2010

My, how the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX has grown. The plucky little sedan has gone off to summer camp and returned as a full-figured looker. Now donning its bigger sister’s widebody dress and uprated wheels at all four corners, there are few tells this thing isn’t fully capable of stopping at a moment’s notice. And all we can say is: It’s about time.

Even though the WRX has always had plenty of pep and other worldly grip, its outer shell never quite managed to hint at the go-fast fun lurking underneath its sizable hood scoop. No more.

The car has ditched its Clark Kent glasses in favor of a look that’s been distilled from the mighty STI – one part Gundam, two parts track-hardened awesome. The move is destined to give the oft-neglected Rex the attention it deserves in the Subaru stable for the first time in years, though the change is more than a set of fenders. Subaru’s engineers have poured over the car to wring even more potency out of one of the tuning universe’s most capable platforms straight from the factory.

It’s easy to think that the big news here is the WRX’s new sheetmetal, and to some extent, it is. By gracing the WRX with the same wide shell as the more sinister STI, Subaru was able to incorporate a few mechanical feats that would have been otherwise impossible under the old skin.

The new metal has added 1.3 inches to the width, and the 2011 model immediately looks stockier and more muscular than its predecessor. Where the 2010 car used the same doughy lines of the base Impreza, the 2011 now wears the ripped body of an MMA warrior.

Up front, you’re likely to recognize the hood, fascia and fenders – they’re the same kit tacked on to the 2010 STI – and predictably, they manage to look right at home on the less athletic WRX. Move toward the rear, and the wider track is somewhat more pronounced. The car now has hips the likes of which you aren’t going to see anywhere outside of the show car circuit. It’s not going to be for everyone, but we’re digging it in more ways the one. However, we have a harder time with the rear fascia. The inverted scoop design is neither functional nor flattering, and for once, we found ourselves pining for the same faux-diffuser look every other designer is playing with at the moment. It’s like the tail of the WRX just won’t stop smiling at us, and that’s just not natural.

While the exterior is a far cry from what we saw on dealer lots last year, you won’t see too many revolutionary changes in the cabin. Subaru designers swapped most of the simulated metal accents on the dash in favor of a more subdued black plastic. It’s certainly an upgrade, even if it has the unintended effect of darkening the cabin. It was hard to tell given our limited time with the vehicle, but we’re thinking the new material will stand up to more abuse without scarring. At least we hope so. If you even looked at the old trim the wrong away, it would demonstrate its offense in the form of unsightly scratches.

Otherwise, the interior is familiar territory. The seats are comfortable and wear the same splashes of red stitching that crop up on the steering wheel and door panels, and while the dash and doors are lathered in plenty of hard plastics, the overall demeanor is pleasant given the price point. Don’t expect a calm ride, though. Subaru makes no qualms about the fact that the majority of WRX buyers are guys who are under 40 – a segment that is more apt to sacrifice ride comfort for a little performance – and as such, things aren’t exactly church-quiet inside.

The saucier bodywork is stylish and all, but its big reason for being has more to do with grip than fashion. Shoving an extra 1.3 inches into a car’s track is a move that is bound to pay off on the skid pad, but the change also allowed the minds in the Subaru engineering department to bolt on a new, wider set of wheels. While last year’s model hit the road with 17×7 rollers, the 2011 model comes from the factory with 17×8 alloys wrapped in 235/45R17 Dunlop SP01 summer rubber. Despite the upsize, Subaru claims that each new wheel is 1.5 pounds lighter than the narrower, outgoing piece. Progress is good, especially when it keeps unsprung weight to a minimum.

Even with the lighter shoes, the WRX now weighs around 33 pounds more than it did last year. If you’re wondering where those pounds came from, look no further than the extra sheetmetal, though we’re told there’s some additional bracing at work as well. Subaru also swapped the rear subframe bushings for stiffer units, though odds are you would have to spend some time really flogging the car around a track to tell the difference. The company claims that along with the wider stance, the bushings have helped reduce body roll compared the 2010 car.

The engine and transmission remain unchanged, and as such, buyers can look forward to a plenty gutsy 265 horsepower, 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine churning out 244 pound-feet of torque. The flat-four is bolted to a five-speed manual transmission – the only gearbox Subaru offers in WRX trim. As with the rest of the Pleiades fleet, the 2011 WRX boasts full-time all-wheel drive. According to the EPA, the combination is good for 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway – numbers that continue to disappoint in this day and age, but are par for the boxer. Still, it’s funny how quickly you learn to forget about unimpressive fuel economy when you’re behind the leather-wrapped steering wheel.

As much as we would have loved to rack up a few hard laps around our favorite track in the all-wheel drive beastie, we were left to play with the WRX in the hills around Aspen, Colorado. One could do far worse than the undulating tarmac that snakes through the Rocky Mountains that surround the town, but less-than-trivial worries like an unnaturally high bicyclist population and a moratorium on the laws of natural selection kept us from being able to do more than string a few apexes together.

Even so, the WRX is plenty of fun. While 8,000 feet isn’t exactly the best altitude for internal combustion engines or the human lung, the turbo four-pot had little problem getting off of its haunches and going. Subaru has given the car a conservative 0-60 mph time of around 5.4 seconds – a figure that felt about right, even with the car suffering from altitude atrophy. Rowing through the five gears is second nature thanks to the chunky gearbox, though we wouldn’t mind a slightly stiffer clutch for cog-swapping. The whole experience made us wishful for a stint at the tiller in a location that’s a little closer to sea level.

While power felt a little lackluster while we were tickling the clouds, the car’s grip and brakes could care less about elevation, and as such, the little Rex had no problem clinging to the ribbon of asphalt that snakes up to Independence Pass. On the street, you would have to be doing something seriously wrong to out-drive the car’s physical capabilities. The platform is planted well beyond the punch of the turbo four, even with all 265 ponies kicking at the transmission. Similarly, the brakes can take the kind of beating that comes along with shedding 2,000 feet of mountain in around 20 minutes without fade or complaint.

Complete with its new suit, the 2011 WRX remains one of the best performance buys on the market. Subaru has upped the car’s MSRP by a full grand to $25,495 for both the four- and five-door trims, which seems only fair given the wider track and more sinister sheetmetal. The upgraded sticker seems completely worth it in our eyes and should pay for itself the first time you turn a wheel in anger.

Report: Honda to kill off Acura RL/Legend globally, discontinue gas Civic models in Japan

Arquivado em Acura, Honda, Sedans/Saloons, hybrid, japan por admin em 16-07-2010

Word coming from Japan’s Nikkei business daily (as reported by Reuters) indicates that Honda has finally decided to discontinue the slow selling Acura RL and its Japanese market counterpart, the Honda Legend.

Ostensibly the flagship of Acura’s brand here in North America, the RL has been a slow-seller for quite some time, upstaged in part by the company’s less-expensive, higher-volume TL sedan. For some years now, the TL has offered more space, similar tech and even more power (in the Type S model), making the RL a particularly tough sell for dealers. Through the first half of this year, only 872 RLs have been sold in the United States.

Another production change reported by the Nikke that would only affect the Japanese market is the discontinuation of conventional gasoline versions of the Civic. If accurate, that would mean that from now until at least until the next-generation Civic arrives in the Fall of 2011, Honda will only sell the Civic hybrid in its home market.

In addition, the JDM Elysion minivan is also apparently set to get the axe.

Autoblog reached out to Honda for comment on the Nikkei story, and spokesman Chuck Schifsky would only say that the automaker does not comment on future product plans, noting that no official announcement has been made about the fate of the RL/Legend, the JDM Civic or the Elysion. Top tip, Joaquin!

2011 Infiniti G25 hits dealers… in China

Arquivado em China, Infiniti, Sedans/Saloons por admin em 15-07-2010

Finally caught where the eyes of the general population can see it, the Infiniti G25 posed for a few photos at a Chinese dealership, and from the outside it’s hard to distinguish the entry-level Infiniti from the 3.7-liter V6-powered G37 sedan.

As you might guess from the name, the entry-level G25 has a 2.5-liter version of the VQ-Series V6 that produces 232 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. Interestingly enough, it’s also possible to get this same powerplant in the Chinese-market EX crossover as… you guessed it, the EX25. For its part, the G25 is also starting to become available in select additional markets including Russia.

At the moment, there is no word about any plans for either model to be launched in North America.

2011 Chevrolet Caprice PPV Detective package details uncovered

Arquivado em Chevrolet, GM, Sedans/Saloons por admin em 13-07-2010

A new generation of police cruisers is afoot. We’ve already seen the likes of Ford’s Taurus-based Police Interceptor up close, and we’ve even seen General Motors opens the floodgates with a full raft of images of its Caprice PPV. While Ford has opted to use its EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 for high-powered police action, Chevrolet has taken a more traditional approach, fitting the Caprice with a 6.0-liter V8 cranking out 355 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

We already knew what to expect for the standard police-spec Caprice, but we’ve been extra curious about the special “Detective package” that adds some plainclothes stealthiness to the Caprice, especially as it seems to hint at what the oft-rumored civilian version of this car might look like. It’s available in seven different colors (we’ll just stick with black, thanks), uses all the same mechanical underpinnings as the standard Police PPV, and for the moment at least, remains unavailable in a retail model for John Q. Public.

Be sure to scroll through the gallery below to check out the entire PDF of the Caprice PPV’s features.

Maserati’s baby Quattroporte expected around 2015

Arquivado em Maserati, Others, Sedans/Saloons por admin em 12-07-2010

Maserati has ambitious plans to break out of the fringe and into the mainstream. To do so, the Trident marque is going to need more than just the two models it currently holds in its stable. Fortunately, Maserati has plans in place to expand and they’re beginning to come into focus.

Following earlier reports from back in April that the Modenese automaker was planning to slot a BMW 5 Series rival in below the current Quattroporte, and subsequent rumors that the QP’s successor could go both all-wheel drive and more eco-friendly, come new reports on the smaller sedan’s progress.

Motor Trend projects that the baby QP will arrive around 2015 with a starting price around $68,000. A flexible new platform could underpin the next Quattroporte itself, as well as the successor to the current GranTurismo. Sources also forecast that the base version of the next-gen QP will also go slightly down-market, but that the space between the two sedans in the stable will remain sufficiently delineated.

Hyundai: Sonata 2.0 Turbo hits 60 in 6.5 seconds, returns 34 mpg highway

Arquivado em Hyundai, Sedans/Saloons por admin em 23-06-2010

According to Hyundai, its new 274-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged engine for the 2011 Sonata sedan is going to be a real gem. To wit, the Korean automaker says the boosted-four will propel its midsize sedan to 60 miles per hour in just 6.5 seconds. That’s serious speed for the segment and it means the Sonata will at least have the accelerative chops to stick with the rest of the sport sedan competition.

Of course, these days frugality is just as important as horsepower, and Hyundai assures us that its 2.0T-powered Sonata will be able to return the promised 22 miles per gallon in the city and 34 on the highway – all on regular-grade fuel. For those who like to keep track of such things, Hyundai claims those figures are 16% and 17% better respectively than the outgoing 3.5-liter V6.

Want more? Well, that’s all we can share for now… but our initial driving impressions will be on their way just as soon as Hyundai gives the word. Stay tuned.
