NHTSA probing windows on Toyota Matrix, Corolla and Pontiac Vibe

Toyota’s Matrix wagon, Corolla sedan and its mechanical twin the Pontiac Vibe sport wagon are all in hot water after motorists have begun to issue complaints about their power side-front windows. Reports indicate the windows are getting stuck, making popping noises, and in some cases shattering and injuring passengers. To date, more than 503 complaints have been received by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is currently looking into the issue. Ultimately, the investigation may trigger a recall affecting 676,747 vehicles manufactured during the 2003 and 2004 model years at NUMMI, the GM-Toyota joint-venture plant that found itself in a pot of hot water after an employee accused her superiors last November of letting defective vehicles leave the facility.

Interesting to note: This may become the first windows recall that doesn’t require PC owners to download a patch. (Hardy har har.)

GM to dealers: You’re not getting a Pontiac Trans Am

Since Buick, Pontiac and GMC dealers are in the process of consolidating their showrooms, many were likely hoping for a halo product that could draw customers into the showroom. Hey, wouldn’t a version of the upcoming Chevy Camaro badged as a Pontiac Trans Am revival do the trick? Maybe, but at the NADA conference this week, GM told these dealers that a Pontiac Trans Am is not going to happen. Blame the new, more stringent federal fuel economy regulations for killing off this cool idea. In fact, the new regs also mean that the automaker will be scaling back on transforming Pontiac into a rear-wheel-drive performance division. Though GM assured dealers that Pontiac will remain a car-only brand, the assurance that a debacle like the Aztec won’t happen a second time is little comfort to those who were hoping Pontiac would once again be the brand that builds excitement. And who says performance has to be totally sacrificed for fuel economy? New powertrains are being developed that make the most of the internal combustion engine’s efficiency, and a twin-turbo, direct-inject four-cylinder can make gobs of power while being much more efficient than an equally powerful V6 or even V8.

GM did inform Buick, Pontiac and GMC dealers that they would be getting 12 new or special-edition vehicles over the next 20 months. A special-edition GMC Sierra pickup called Pro Grade was mentioned, for instance. Still, the quashing of any hope for a new Trans Am means that the number of vehicles slated to share the Camaro’s rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform in the U.S. is dwindling. Only the Pontiac G8 and G8 ST car-based truck are confirmed, with Zeta-based rear-wheel-drive sedans for Buick and Chevy still up in the air. This means that without the ability to spread out costs across a number of new vehicles, the price of producing these vehicles will likely be high and passed on to the performance-minded consumer.

GM recalling over 300,000 vehicles

After seeing a variety of reports cropping up this afternoon, we were finally able to get some hard information regarding a recall that’s affecting 313,000 passenger vehicles and crossovers from General Motors.

The recall involves a seal on the rear axle pinion that’s apparently prone to leaking, which has the possibility of locking the driven wheels and causing a loss of control. GM will be recalling 2005-2007 Cadillac CTS models, STS sedans and SRX crossovers, as well as the 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and it’s platform sibling the 2007 Saturn Sky. All told, that’s 275,936 vehicles in the U.S., along with around 38,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and Asia.

Pontiac G8 production now underway

Since the G8 was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show, there has been an air of optimism for the Pontiac brand. There’s good reason for the uptick in serotonin, too, as the G8 is a real live RWD sedan from the General. It doesn’t hurt that its 6.0L V8 can kick out 362 HP and hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. It may seem as though the G8 unveiling was a million years ago, but production has finally begun for the Holden Commodore-based sedan. The G8 and the Commodore will be built in the same Australian plant, with the facility running at full steam to a tune of 620 units per day. About half of that number will make its way outside of OZ, split between Chevrolet (Middle East), Vauxhall (UK), Daewoo (Korea), and Pontiac. That probably doesn’t make room for more than 50,000 G8s a year here in the States, and in the unlikely event the sports sedan isn’t a hit, GM can shift sales anywhere else in the world. The G8 will hit dealer showrooms sometime in the 1st quarter of 2008, and we’re eagerly anticipating taking a spin in the most exciting Pontiac in a generation.

eBay Find of the Day: Pontiac GTO from “XXX State of the Union”

What’s the best way to ruin a classic muscle car? Just slap on some gaudy 22-inch chrome wheels and give it a colorful chameleon paint job. While we’d much rather have a pristine example in showroom condition, you have to admit this 1967 Pontiac GTO is… unique. After all, Samuel L. Jackson himself has been behind the wheel in the movie “XXX State of the Union” (we think Ice Cube, too) and it even has functional rocket launchers. We’re not sure when you’d ever be able to use them, but they would still be cool to have, you know, in case. The car also comes with a custom interior and more gauges than you’ll know what to do with, an Air Ride suspension, V8, and automatic transmission. That’s good, because we doubt whoever buys this car will know how to drive stick.

REPORT: 2009 GMC Terrain to replace Pontiac Torrent in US

With the Torrent dropped from Pontiac’s long-term plans as the brand returns its focus to performance-oriented cars, GM appears to already know how and where it’ll replace the small crossover. The answer was apparently unveiled back in November when GMC introduced the Terrain in Kuwait. Like the Saturn Vue, the GMC Terrain is essentially a badge-engineered Opel Antara; and it’s reportedly coming to the US, according to an Automotive News report that’s set to hit the wires tomorrow. Due as a 2009 model, the Terrain will be GMC’s first foray into the compact SUV CUV segment. As you can see above, the division’s branding looks right at home on the Vue/Antara bodywork. The long-in-the-tooth Chevy Equinox can’t be hanging around much longer, either, and while GM has denied plans to do so in the past, we’ve got to believe the Chevy Captiva version of the Antara is waiting in the wings to carry the Equinox moniker forward. At least we hope that’s the case.

No manual option for the 2008 Pontiac G8?!

On the eve of what could be the revival of GM’s “Excitement” division, it comes to light that the new Pontiac G8 will make the trek from Down Under sans stick. For whatever reason, General Motors has decided to offer the G8 – one of its sportiest and most potentially enthusiast-pleasing models – with only an automatic at launch. Granted, it’s the General’s six-speed slushbox with paddle shifters, but for those of you who prefer to row your own and have a down payment in hand, you’ll have to wait until late 2008.

So you say to yourself, “Self, I’d prefer the 256 hp, 3.6-liter Direct-Injected V6 in the base model. It’ll save some weight and Chevron can only extort so much from me when I hit the pump.” Wrong again. The base model will also come with same 6T70 six-speed auto, although the same motor mounted in the new Cadillac CTS has an available manual option. Befuddled? We are too.
