Peugeot to produce HX1 flagship luxury crossover?

Filed under hybrid, luxury, Others, Peugeot 18-10-2011

French automaker Peugeot has had an interesting back and forth lately when it comes to its flagship model. The big 607 sedan was discontinued a couple of years back due to lackluster sales, replaced by the new 508 that also succeeded the smaller 407 sedan. Then reports began sprouting up that the Lion marque was planning on turning that into a crossover wagon similar to the approach taken by Audi with the A6 Allroad or Volvo with the XC70.

We figured that’s what we were looking at when the company unveiled the 508 RXH diesel hybrid in Frankfurt, but at the same time Peugeot also showcased the HX1 concept – a sort of luxury crossover that was more similar in concept to the Mercedes-Benz R-Class than the Audi Allroad.

Intercontinental Le Mans Cup hits Spa-Francorchamps [spoilers]

Filed under Audi, Motorsports, Others, Peugeot 10-05-2011

The second round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup took place in Belgium, and even though the Audi R18 took to the starting line for the first time, Peugeot was able to take the top two spots on the podium after six hours of racing.

Interestingly, the qualifying results were the opposite of the race results: Audi racers occupied the first three positions on the grid, and although a Peugeot 908 was in fourth, it wasn’t a team car, it was that of the Oreca squad. Due to an incident-strewn and red-flagged qualifying session, the first Peugeot Sport Total car was back in 13th, the second was in 18th, and the third wasn’t even classified and started at the back of the grid.

As we said before, it’s that time when everyone starts rolling out their year-end “Best of” lists and revisits their favorite rides of 2010. Top Gear is in on the action, naming its annual award winners. Its list, as you can see, is diverse and loaded with forbidden fruit (at least for those of us in the U.S.)

Hypercar of the Year: Koenigsegg Agera
Cabrio of the Year: Maserati GranCabrio
Grand Tourer of the Year: Bentley Continental GT
Hot Hatch of the Year: Volkswagen Golf R
Family Car of the Year: BMW 520d Touring
Engine of the Year: Fiat TwinAir
Coupe of the Year: Peugot RCZ
Luxury Car of the Year: Jaguar XJ

Besides the standard categories, the three hosts also picked their favorites of 2010. Jeremy Clarkson is in love with the Pagani Zonda R, James May goes with the Bugatti Veyron Supersport and Richard Hammond is quite fond of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Though we’ve given you the list, it’s still worth a trip over to the Top Gear website to read the reasons behind each choice.

Film Noir: Peugeot RCZ gets matte black for special Asphalt edition

We weren’t looking for more reasons to pine after the Peugeot RCZ. Initially categorized as a French knock-off of the Audi TT, it seems the slinky coupe from French auto giant PSA has come into its own. But now we’ve got another reason to want one, and its name is the Asphalt edition.

The blacked-out special features a unique Noir Telluric exterior shade with black 19-inch alloys and a black leather interior to match. The 200-horsepower 1.6-liter turbo four co-developed with BMW does the pulling duties overseas, while we’re stuck over here wishing we could get our hands on one.

PSA Peugeot Citroën to launch three-cylinder turbo in 2013

Filed under Citroen, Others, Peugeot 13-04-2010

PSA Peugeot Citroën have announced that it will spend €175 Million to tool up one of its engine plants to build a new turbocharged inline-three cylinder engine. The Douvrin engine plant will have a capacity of 320,000 powerplants per year starting in early in 2013. The 1.2-liter engines will join a normally aspirated version that debuts one year earlier.

While PSA is one of the world leaders in diesel engine technology, this new engine is a gasoline-fueled unit. The high-volume commitment to a downsized gasoline engine is a sign of the increasing difficulty of meeting both new carbon dioxide emissions standards and nitrogen oxide standards that are part of the Euro VI package.

While PSA has no current plans to sell either Peugeot or Citroën vehicles in the United States, we are likely to see some three cylinder units coming from other automakers in the next few years including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and possibly Ford with a rumored 1.2-liter Ecoboost.

PSA Peugeot Citroën to Invest €175 Million to Produce New 3-Cylinder Turbo Petrol Engine

Between now and 2013, PSA Peugeot Citroën plans to invest €175 million at its La Française de Mécanique plant in Douvrin, in the Pas-de-Calais department of northern France, to prepare for the production of a new 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine.
The investment follows on from the Group’s decision to extend its line-up of petrol engines with a turbocharged version of the 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine currently under development.

Series production is scheduled to start in early 2013, with an output of 320,000 units per year.

This new engine version is based on the 3-cylinder 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine, which will be manufactured at the Group’s Trémery plant in eastern France starting in early 2012.

La Française de Mécanique currently builds petrol and diesel powerplants for Peugeot and Citroën Peugeot models, as well as the EP engine developed in partnership with the BMW Group.

With this investment, PSA Peugeot Citroën has confirmed its commitment to maintaining extensive engine production operations in France.

Both the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region and Pas-de-Calais departmental authorities are actively supporting the project, which will support industrial development and economic growth in France’s second-largest automotive region.

Commenting on the investment, Philippe Varin noted: “By producing this new engine at La Française de Mécanique, we will be able to leverage world-class manufacturing expertise. And with its state-of-the-art environmental technology, the new powerplant will enable PSA Peugeot Citroën to strengthen its leadership in low-carbon vehicles.”

Created in 1969, La Française de Mécanique is a 50-50 joint venture between PSA Peugeot Citroën and Renault, with 3,400 employees. It’s machining and assembly lines produce 6,200 engines per day. Output in 2009 totalled 1.3 million units, of which 942,000 were for PSA Peugeot Citroën.

Looks like a winner: Peugeot 207 S16

Kris Meeke is the 2009 Intercontinental Rally Champion, and Peugeot UK wants to celebrate that accomplishment. As such, it’s releasing the 207 S16 – a 207 Sport tarted up to evoke the Peugeot 207 IRC car Meeke pilots. To that extent, you can get an optional graphics package (which is still more restrained than race car’s nose-to-tail Union Jack livery), along with a body kit including “pseudo rear diffuser” (Peugeot’s words), upgraded wheels, a mesh grille, tinted glass and special interior badging. All 250 Peugeot 207 S16s are mechanically identical to the regular 207 Sport 1.6 VTi they’re based on. Oh, and Kris Meeke signs every one. If you’re in the UK, owning the 207 S16 will dent your wallet to the tune of £14,695. The full press release is pasted after the jump.

THE PEUGEOT 207 S16 FULL OF VERVE ON THE ROAD AND OFF

* Powered by a 1.6 litre 120 bhp VTi petrol engine

Peugeot’s 207 has dominated the Intercontinental Rally Challenge for the last three years, whether on the gravel roads of Scotland or the tarmac of San Remo.

To recognise this achievement and that of Kris Meeke in winning the 2009 IRC drivers’ title, Peugeot has created the Special Edition 207 S16.

Based on the 207 Sport 1.6 VTi 3dr, only 250 examples of this car will be produced. The S16 adds to the already comprehensive standard equipment of the 207 sport model:

* Bianca White exterior body colour
* Full 207 RC Cup bodykit comprising front and rear spoilers, side skirts and a pseudo rear diffuser
* 17″ Hockenheim Alloy Wheels
* SP Sports mesh grille
* Dark tinted rear windows from the 207 GTi model
* Special interior badge signed by Kris Meeke
* Optional free of charge vinyl rally graphics which mimic those found on Kris Meeke’s IRC winning 207 S2000 rally car.

The 207 S16 benefits from over £1,200 worth of additional specification compared to a standard Sport model and is priced at £14,695.

To further enhance the appeal of the 207 S16 an optional leather interior is also available priced at £684.21. It is available in black with either black or silver Grey stitching.
