If Mitsubishi is serious about its electrification efforts, it has to offer more than the pint-sized all-electric i in the States. That’s where the Concept PX-MiEV II comes in.

What you’re looking at is the plug-in hybrid version of the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander, something Mitsubishi confirms is set to go on sale sometime in 2012.

What’s the most fuel-efficient vehicle sold in the United States? Well, for 2012 it’s the Mitsubishi i, at least according to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.

The federal agencies have issued the latest edition of their Fuel Economy Guide, and Mitsubishi’s subcompact electric leads all vehicles with a combined rating of 112 miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent. The Nissan Leaf is second at 99 MPGe, the Ford Transit Connect Electric is third at 62, and the Chevrolet Volt ranks fourth at 60 MPGe.

Refreshed 2012 Mitsubishi Shogun rocks up

For those of you outside of the United States, Mitsubishi has let loose the goods on the 2012 Shogun (formerly pronounced “Montero” in North America). It is mainly a matter of detail tweaks, with a bolder, shinier, redesigned front and new items like the six-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels and black roof rails. The turbodiesel engine is Euro V compliant, but it posts the same 197 horsepower and gas mileage numbers of the outgoing model.

Nomenclature has shifted, too, with JR and KS designations replaced by SG2, SG3 and SG4 in short- and long-wheelbase kit. The Warrior model carries over, and “will sit above the SG2.” Prices work out to £29,499 ($47,574 based on current exchange rates) for a base SG2, ascending to £40,999 ($66,121) for the SG4. Follow the jump for the press release. Read More »

Mecum is set to auction off the very last Mitsubishi Eclipse ever produced at its Normal, Illinois plant.

The 2012 Eclipse Coupe packs the company’s 3.8-liter V6 engine and is equipped with the SE package – the only car in the model’s history to receive that combination. The Eclipse marks the end of 22 years of continuous production with Kalapana Black paint, 18-inch wheels and SE side graphics. The interior, meanwhile, is laden with leather seats, a 650-watt Rockford Fostgate sound system, rearview camera and HID headlights.

Mitsubishi promises to “evolve” Lancer Evolution, lowers price in UK

After a strong backlash from its announcement that the Lancer Evolution would be no more after its 10th generation, Mitsubishi has backpedaled on its decision to kill the car. The automaker promises that the Evo X will live out its life cycle as planned, and will continue to evolve in the future, but that may mean going a slightly different direction. Read More »

Geneva 2011: Mitsubishi Global Small Concept, as bland as its name

Filed under Concept Cars, hatchback, Mitsubishi, Others 01-03-2011

The seventh-generation Mitsubishi Colt is well overdue for a replacement, and here in Geneva, Mitsu took the wraps off what’s likely to form its next B-segment player.

As you’d suspect from its unimaginative name, the Global Small Concept is being developed for worldwide consumption, and spans a squat 147 inches and a relatively narrow 66 inches wide, with power provided by a three-cylinder MIVEC gasoline engine. Once the official production model debuts early next year, 1.0- and 1.2-liter three-pots will be available, along with start-stop tech and regenerative braking. And with a vehicle this small, it’s all but assured that Mitsubishi will take some of the lessons learned from its i-MiEV project to produce an all-electric model. Read More »

Report: Nissan, Mitsubishi will work together on small, possibly electric, cars

Filed under Mitsubishi, Nissan, Others 16-12-2010

Following reports that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will open a new, efficient global small car plant in Thailand, rumors that MMC and Nissan are talking about a 50-50 joint company in 2011 are a lot more interesting. Automotive News is reporting that the two Japanese automakers could bring a small car to market together in 2012 and – here’s where it gets good – they might also work together on electric vehicles. Mitsubishi has been making the Mitsubishi iMiEV for years and Nissan just delivered its first Leaf. The two automakers also participate in a joint car-sharing program in Kyoto, Japan.

According to a statement from Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, no details have been decided, but an analyst at a consulting company in Tokyo told AN, “The alliance of the two automakers seems to be a good one as we can expect more cooperation in electric vehicles going forward.” Ghosn’s statement said the partnership, “is important for Nissan as it supports our expansion in emerging markets, meets immediate capacity needs overseas and enables us to grow our minicar business in Japan.”

Mitsubishi and Nissan already work together on some vehicles, like the Mitsubishi Lancer Cargo (made by Nissan) and the Minicab, Town Box, eKWagon and Pajero Mini models (built by Mitsubishi for Nissan).
