Fiat launches pricy new special-edition 500 Abarth Competizione

Cars may be getting smaller, but that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily getting cheaper. As if to prove that point, Fiat has thumbed its nose at the Tata Nano with a special 500 that packs a big price tag in a small package.

Commemorating the first anniversary of Abarth’s return to the Dutch market, Fiat’s performance division has launched this special-edition 500 Abarth Competizione. It costs nearly $35k and only ten will be made available for exclusive consumption in Holland. The €3,000 premium (nearly $4,200 USD) over the stock 500 Abarth gets enthusiastic buyers a special little hot hatch with a black roof, black 17-inch alloys and matching black graphics, along with special bucket seats inside. The 500 Abarth Competizione also comes equipped with sat-nav, air-con and a premium audio system. Although the Competizione edition packs the 135hp turbo four, buyers can always upgrade with the 160hp EsseEsse kit. For a premium, of course.

Fiat tempts Latin American and European audiences with Strada Cabine Dupla pickup

Arquivado em Euro, Fiat, Trucks/Pickups por admin em 06-07-2009

For European and South American markets, Fiat rolled out several versions of its Strada pickup last year. Now, the Italian company introduces a “dual cab” version with two extra back seats – but without two extra doors. Called the Cabine Dupla or Doble Cabina, it’s almost as if our long-departed Subaru Brat lives on with a secret Italian identity… and without its four-wheel-drive. The Cabine Dupla has an electronic diff that ought to be passable when things get a little dirty. Our question is: Could this be a future Dodge?

Officially Official: 2010 Citroen C3 is here

Arquivado em Citroen, Economy, Euro por admin em 30-06-2009

The Citroen C3 is old enough in car years that it’s getting a re-do before it undergoes a mid-life crisis. The new version is certainly a more mature design, receding hairline and all. Citroen has come up with its own euphemism for it, coining the phrase “Zenith Windscreen” to describe a large windshield that extends further up into the roof than normal to create a panoramic feel to the interior.

The new C3 is a smoother looking supermini than before, with slicker styling keeping it modern and slipping through the air with a Cd of .30. Inside the redone sheetmetal, the interior gets classed up and quieted down. Most notably, there’s an integrated air freshener, presumably useful when you’re using all 10.5 cubic feet of boot space to haul big dogs or foie gras party platters.

An HDi (Citroenese for “diesel”) engine keeps CO2 emissions low, and new powerplants are in the pipeline for 2011. The new engines will use stop/start, the diesel versions of which will drop carbon dioxide emissions further, while gasoline-fueled C3s will also dip below the 100g/km of CO2 emissions level with a new three-cylinder engine. The C3’s new duds don’t come with the typical generational increase in weight, and the Chevron-emblazoned C-class car will motor onto the small car battlefield ready to earn more accolades with its latest generation. Follow the jump for Citroen’s official press releas,e or browse over the C3’s new design in the high-res gallery below.

Press Release:

A TOUCH OF GLASS: CITROËN INTRODUCES THE NEW C3

Citroën has released first details of the new C3, a completely redesigned successor to the popular C3 supermini – a bestseller with over 2 million units delivered worldwide.

Arriving in the UK early in 2010, the new C3 boasts contemporary lines and seductive styling, compact exterior dimensions – cleverly matched to exceptional interior space – good environmental credentials and a refined, high quality interior – as well as offering a unique and innovative windscreen design.

On the outside, new C3 gets a sportier edge, with a tauter profile that gives the car a more dynamic, yet robust appearance. Nowhere is the modern styling more apparent than in the design of the new C3’s unique Zenith windscreen, which flows dramatically up and over the heads of the front occupants. Coupled with slim side pillars, the huge progressively tinted windscreen offers a truly panoramic field of vision – along with optimum overhead sun protection.

‘Visiodrive’ – the word created to best describe the new Citroën C3 – is born out of this unique windscreen, which is yet another example of Citroën’s use of ‘Creative Technologie’. The screen helps to create a bright and pleasurable cabin environment for driver and passengers alike – improving visibility, road safety, driving pleasure, ambience and the overall feeling of spaciousness.

Inside the cabin, attention to detail and the use of high quality materials, delivers an air of refinement and class, which is complemented by enhanced sound insulation and a pleasant fragrance from the car’s integrated air freshener.

Despite its added sophistication, increased comfort and interior space, the new C3 remains one of the most compact vehicles in its segment – and avoids any increase in weight over the current model. At just 3.94m long and 1.71m wide, it offers a generous 300 litres of boot space, along with numerous storage areas throughout the cabin. Occupants also benefit from a feeling of comfort and roominess with a slightly raised seating position for ease of access and improved visibility.

The new C3 is at ease in the city, with its compact dimensions and 10.2m turning circle, as well as on the open road, thanks to its enhanced dynamics. The careful control of weight, combined with optimised aerodynamics (Cd of 0.30), allows the new C3 to achieve excellent fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

From launch, an HDi 90 powered version will be available emitting just 99g/km CO2 – the first full production Citroën to emit less than 100g/km. Whilst the arrival of new power plants from 2011, incorporating second-generation Stop & Start technology, will see diesel versions emitting as little as 90g/km CO2, to be followed by new generation three-cylinder petrol engines with less than 100g/km CO2.

Modern and perfectly at home in the 21st century, the new C3 can be well connected with USB, iPod and Bluetooth® functionality, as well as offering Citroën’s ‘MyWay’ satellite navigation and Hifi System®.

Stunning GTbyCITROËN concept car runs Gran Turismo London city streets course in real life!

Arquivado em Citroen, Concept Cars, Euro, Super Cars por admin em 23-06-2009

The almost impossibly long and low GTbyCITROËN, which started life as a concept car for the wildly popular Gran Turismo gaming franchise (part of Polyphony Digital Inc. and Sony’s Playstation empire), has made its first real-life foray through London in a recreation of the video game’s street circuit.

Though originally designed as nothing more than a model to drum up interest in the quirky French automaker and the oft-delayed next installment of Gran Turismo, there has reportedly been so much interest in the GT that there is actually a very real chance that Citroen will put the supercar into limited production, possibly powered by a rumbling V8 engine from Detroit.

While this thinly-disguised photo opportunity passage through Piccadilly surely took place at a snail’s pace, we can only hope the French supercar aqcuits itself well as it storms up the upcoming 1.16-mile Goodwood Hill as part of the Sunday Times Supercar Run at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which starts on July 3. CAPITAL THRILLS: GTbyCITROËN CONCEPT TURNS GAMING FANTASY INTO LONDON REALITY

Citroën’s stunning concept supercar, the GTbyCITROËN, took to the streets of central London on Tuesday (23/06) to recreate part of the ’street circuit’ featured in Gran Turismo® – the PLAYSTATION®3 driving game which the GTbyCITROËN was designed for.

Taking in some of the Capital’s most famous landmarks, the virtual-turned-reality supercar swapped pixels for Piccadilly as it swept through the world famous circus, toured Regent Street, rounded Trafalgar Square and cruised down the Mall past Buckingham Palace.

The result of a unique partnership between Citroën and Polyphony Digital Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc., creators of the Gran Turismo game series, the GTbyCITROËN concept measures nearly five metres long (4.96m) and just over a metre high (1.09m) with an impressive supercar design sporting wide air intakes, rear air-diffuser, horizontal LED headlamps, gull wing doors and diamond-effect 21inch aluminium wheels. Inside the cabin offers a refined racing experience with copper, steel and black leather finishes combined with hi-tech racing controls.

Rendered Speculation: Ford Kuga crossover to get rakish coupe counterpart?

Arquivado em Euro, Ford, Others por admin em 18-06-2009

Could CUV coupes (coupe-UVs?) be the next big thing? BMW and Acura have both introduced fastback crossovers, and AutoExpress has tossed up some renderings of a super-sharp Ford Kuga that could do battle in this new arena. While the styling on the regular Kuga is attractive enough, a two door taking even more cues from the Iosis X concept is pretty damned delectible.

Style might rule above substance, but that’s not much to complain about, considering that Ford’s EcoBoost engines ported from the Fiesta are what AE suggests will spin a PowerShift dual-clutch unit. The rest of the details, such as stop-start and superb dynamics, could all just be fantastical dreaming predicated on some good looking altered images; Ford’s concentrating on the Focus and C-Max, with an MPV following on the heels of those two. If it does happen, we should see something on the show circuit for 2011.

Seat to launch 265hp Leon Cupra R in Frankfurt?

Arquivado em Euro, Seat por admin em 10-06-2009

Buyers overseas aren’t left wanting for sport models from Volkswagen’s Spanish subsidiary, including the sporty FR line and the powerful Cupra range. But if the latest reports from our Iberian counterparts prove accurate, Seat could be preparing to launch an even more powerful version of its Golf-based Leon at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

Packing the same 265hp engine from the Volkswagen Scirocco R, the rumored Seat Leon Cupra R would also feature a dual-clutch gearbox, AP Racing brakes, a specially-tuned suspension and competition-style bucket seats inside, and the possible inclusion of Seat’s trick new XDS electronic differential. With the current range-topping, 240hp Leon Cupra sprinting to sixty in just 6.4 seconds and undercutting the Golf GTI by a good few hundred on the sticker, the 265hp Cupra R could prove to be a real barn-stormer.

Land Rover takes the Defender to new heights with Fire & Ice editions

Arquivado em Euro, Land Rover, SUVs por admin em 09-06-2009

It doesn’t get more back-to-basics than the Land Rover Defender. While most of the world’s most hard-core off-roaders – Toyota Land Cruiser, Mercedes G-Wagen, Hummer H2 – have all gone luxed-out, the Defender soldiers on as the bare-bones option. Essentially the same body-on-frame design from 1948, the Defender is still hand-assembled. But what’s Land Rover to do when the market demands luxury? Lux out the Defender, of course.

The limited-production Fire & Ice editions come packed with all the features they could fit in the Defender: Recaro buckets, leather and Alcantara trim, diamond-turned alloys, color-coded head- and tail- lights, glass sunroof panel, running boards and more. The Fire edition comes in a special Vesuvius Orange metallic paint, the Ice edition in Alaska white, both offset by Santorini black accents. All that kit drives the price of the special Land Rover up to €68,400, the equivalent of about $95,000. Just 850 examples will be on offer in various markets across Europe, China and in South Africa. Check out the high-res images in the gallery below for all the angles.

Nissan reportedly preparing Nürburgring edition 370Z for the European market

Arquivado em Coupes, Euro, Nissan, Others, Sports/GTs por admin em 03-06-2009

While Nissan has been trying to master the Nürburgring in its flagship GT-R supercar, it was the one-rung-down 370Z which the Japanese automaker fielded at the track’s 24-hour race last month. To commemorate the occasion, Nissan is reportedly preparing to drop a special commemorative edition of its 370Z on the European market.

Although photos are still unavailable at this time, the Nissan 370Z Nürburgring edition is apparently set to be differentiated by a set of 19-inch OZ Racing alloys wrapped in Dunlop rubber, a sport exhaust system and the requisite batch of special badges. Only 80 examples will be made, each individually numbered, and the model will apparently only be available in yellow. And just to sweeten the deal, Nissan is throwing in a gift card good for over $200 of track time on the Nordschleife.

REPORT: Koenigsegg a finalist in bid to buy Saab

Arquivado em Euro, GM, Others, Saab por admin em 29-05-2009

In a brief article on its website, the UK’s Channel4 says that a Swedish newspaper, Dagens Industri, is reporting that supercar maker Koenigsegg is in the running to purchase either a stake in Saab, or the whole kit and caboodle.

According to the report, Koenigsegg is reportedly a front-runner to rescue the fellow Swedish automaker, with the other suitors being the Renco Group, a U.S. investment company, and the Italian automaker Fiat – the latter of which is being denied by both Fiat and Saab.

Automotive News has asked Saab to comment on the report, but spokeswoman Gunilla Gustavs declined, although she did say that the likely bankruptcy of parent company General Motors will not derail Saab’s plans. Gustavs apparently did impart that GM plans to disclose a “preferred candidate” in the next few weeks.

If Christian von Koenigsegg and his band of merry men manage to get their hands on Saab, we can’t help ourselves from wondering that with their expertise in supercars, perhaps they could bring the Aero X (above) to market. We can dream, can’t we?

Hans Gruber, Your Ride Is Here: Volkswagen rolls out White Night Eos special edition

Arquivado em Convertibles, Euro, Volkswagen por admin em 28-05-2009

We know that Volkswagen’s new special-edition Eos isn’t named after a mythical cavalry figure on an ivory steed, but when we heard that the automaker’s latest model has been dubbed White Night, we couldn’t get Harry Ellis, the cloying stereotypical Eighties businessman from the original Die Hard movie out of our heads (”Hans… Boobie… I’m your White Knight.”). Given that the terrorists in this seminal Bruce Willis film are equally stereotypically cold Germans, we’re not sure that authorities at the Deutsche automaker will appreciate what came to mind for us, but we digress.

In any case, the Eos White Night is big on contrast, with a Candy White body offset by a Deep Black Pearlescent roof, side mirrors, and radiator grille. The look is an interesting one, as it uproots one of the inherent strengths that the folding hardtop convertible medium achieves best – the ability to have a matching body shell and roof, something that isn’t as easily achieved with a conventional folding cloth top.

In addition to the contrasting black-and-white motif, the White Night also receives cherry-red LED taillights, 18-inch “Budapest” alloys, as well as nappa black leather with contrasting light seams, White Night sill panels, and Candy White trim strips. Every White Night comes equipped with automatic climate control, sports suspension (lowered 15 mm) and headed front seats.

The special edition Eos is available for order with any engine save the gasoline V6 – but at this time, it is a Europe only model that starts at a tidy €33,140 (over $46k USD!). 1980’s White Nights Mercury Sable owners, eat your heart out.

PRESS RELEASE:

The new Eos White Night loves contrast

Refined black-and-white contrast for discerning drivers

Wolfsburg, 28 May 2009 – The new Eos White Night embraces the
contrast of black and white: the body is white, while elements
such as the roof, radiator grille and mirror covers are black. This
special model can be ordered starting now.

The Eos White Night provides an interesting set of contrasts, including
exterior paintwork in “Candy White”, a roof painted in “Deep Black
Pearlescent” and cherry-red LED tail lights. A number of details in
black such as the mirror covers, radiator grille and trim strips enhance
the appeal of this special model. 18-inch “Budapest” wheels partially
painted black with a polished finish complete the elegant appearance
of the Eos White Night.

The light and dark accents continue in the interior: the black nappa
leather seats, door and side trim and black steering wheel feature
light-coloured seams. There are also trim strips and radio trim in
“Candy White”. Sill panel strips lettered with “White Night” showcase
this special model.

Convenience elements such as the “Climatronic” climate control
system, sports chassis lowered 15 mm and heated front seats come
as standard in the Eos White Night. The Eos White Night starts from
€33,140 and can be combined with all engine versions except for the
V6.
