Lights Out: GM Minivan plant closes up shop

The last aardvark inspired minivan has passed through the doors of GM’s Doraville, GA assembly facility. The plant, which opened in 1947, has four developers vying to get their hands on the 165-acre parcel. About 1,500 workers have been idled due to the closing, which was a long time coming. The Doraville plant’s closing is an unfortunate consequence of the old GM, and its divestiture is intended to aid General Motors as it continues clawing its way back from the brink.

We can’t say the U-Platform vans will be missed. Though significantly changed from its inception as the Lumina APV with its odd styling, the Uplander was a swing of the pendulum to the other side of weird. Smack dab in the middle was the normal, yet lackluster, Venture. None of the platform’s iterations managed to ignite buyer passions, coming up short against the competition, and lately completely crushed by the Odyssey/Sienna 1-2 punch, with a kick in the head from the Grand Caravan for good measure.

Supercars to Megayachts: Porsche Design styles 135-ft catamaran

In case you hadn’t had quite enough of German automakers producing cars themed after yachts – like the Volkswagen Caddy Topos Sail and Audi Q7 Coastline – here comes one offshoot preparing to actually design a line of mega-yachts.

The Porsche Design boats are being penned for Singaporean shipyard’s Royal Falcon Fleet, and will start off with RFF135, a 135-foot catamaran (that means two hulls for all you land-lubers). Australian firm Incat Crowther and Swedish outfit Kockums are also involved in the project, which is slated to include a variety of mega-yachts for the uber-wealthy with either two hulls or one. Yachts of this size typically leave the engine room up to the buyer’s specifications, along with most everything else, but don’t expect to find a bank of air-cooled flat-sixes below decks. If you’re wondering how an automotive merchandise design firm could translate their competence to the entirely separate field of naval architecture, just remember that, following the Fearless speedboat series, this won’t be the first time Porsche Design has tangled its toes in the water.

Google Maps-powered BMW Search added to 1 and 3 Series

BMW Assist — essentially the Bavarian’s version of GM’s OnStar — has made BMW Search using Google Maps available on the 1 and 3 Series. Previously, it was only available on BMW models from the 5 series up. If you subscribe to the BMW Assist Convenience Plan, you can use BMW Search to find businesses, then input the information directly into the navigation system, or call with your Bluetooth phone over the service’s AT&T Mobility Network (you don’t need to have AT&T, though).

BMW Search joins BMW’s MyInfo service, which allowed customers and businesses to send listings and street addresses directly to the car. BMW Assist is standard on 5, 6, and 7 Series, and included in the Premium Package or as a stand-alone option on all other models.

To allow customers to send business listings and street addresses with associated phone numbers from the internet directly to their BMW, Google and BMW began offering “MyInfo” with the introduction of the X6 back in April, now extended to all other 2009 BMWs except for X3. “BMW Search” now opens up access to the Internet directly from the vehicle, representing another building block in the BMW Assist services portfolio.

New for 2009 is BMW Search, which allows online access to the Google Maps database inside the vehicle to quickly find a desired business with just a key word. The Convenience Plan also includes Critical Calling, a service that can connect the driver to a requested party via a response specialist in case their mobile phone is not in the vehicle or its battery is discharged.

Lastly, the BMW Assist system includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and phone connectivity with phonebook access and speech recognition for dialing by name or number via steering wheel controls. Ford wishes GM a happy 100th birthday

Credit Ford with a classy move yesterday when it strategically left the blinds open in certain offices at its World Headquarters in Dearborn. The effect was a building-sized birthday card congratulating its cross-town competitor, General Motors, on making it 100 years in the automotive business. Ford celebrated its centennial a few years back, so knows how much fun the big 1-0-0 can be. And though they’re technically competitors in this grueling business, both Ford and GM often find themselves in the same boat when it comes to battling imports for market share, appealing to the federal government for loans and generally doing their best not to make Detroit an embarrassment. Did you know that GM almost bought Ford back in the day? The man responsible for making GM what it is today, Billy Durant, made Henry Ford an offer of $8 million to buy his six-year-old car company on October 5, 1909… and Ford accepted. Unfortunately, Ford demanded $2 million up front, preferably in gold, and Durant couldn’t get the loan approved by New York banks. The two automakers’ paths verged from there, but obviously never completely separated.

Aston Martin gets the Bang & Olufsen treatment

The era of the luxury exotic with a so-so sound system is nearly over. Bang & Olufsen worked with product developers at Aston Martin to create the BeoSound DBS audio system that is specifically tuned to 007′s cabin. Thirteen speakers — five tweeters, five midrange, and three woofers — are located in ten places around the cabin. Of course a sound system for the DBS is not just about sound — it is just as much about looks. Two of the tweeters are mounted on the dash and ascend when the car is started. Loudspeaker grilles are finished in contoured aluminum. And all that hardware is controlled by B&O’s Digital Signal Processing system that is matched the DBS interior and adjusts to changing acoustic conditions. All of this means you’ll be able to hear the next Bond theme song, “Another Way to Die,” like never before…

Schumacher gets caught speeding off the track

More speeding in products from the Volkswagen corporate empire; only this time, the driver was smart and didn’t try to run. The driver in this Italian incident, none other than Michael Schumacher, is probably capable of evading the Caribinieri — though maybe he’s not as adept at handling a real car as he is behind the wheel of a four-wheeled fighter jet. Schumi exercised fine judgement and politely accepted his 75 Euro fine, which carries a three-point penalty on his license.

The racing champ told German newspaper Bild that he was “very sorry” and that “it’s out of character” because “speeding is for racetracks only.” Maybe something’s lost in translation, but we have this urge to say “now we know, and knowing is half the battle” after that sparely worded statement. Camaros, turbos, mpgs and the underappreciated V8

The GMnext blog has a post up that talks about the potential viability of a low-displacement turbocharged motor — the direct-injected 2.0L Ecotec turbo, specifically — in upcoming GM cars, including the Camaro. Let’s talk about this a little. The breathed-upon Ecotec delivers 260 horses and 260 lb-ft of torque, and if you’ve driven, say, the Sky or Solstice equipped with it, you know just how ballsy it really is. It’s more powerful (but less torquey) than either V8 offered in the ’87 IROC-Z I thought was so cool back during high school. The turbo four might well be a nice solution in a future iteration of the Camaro, but is the fuel economy argument for it as rock solid as it might seem on the surface?

The Pontiac Solstice GXP with the turbo four has an EPA fuel economy rating of 19 city/28 hwy when mated to a 5-speed manual. Not bad at all for the performance it delivers, but that same drivetrain in the bigger, heavier Camaro isn’t likely to give you equal returns in terms of fuel consumption. Over at AutoblogGreen, Sam notes that the 2.0 turbo’s lighter weight relative to the six- and eight-cylinders the Camaro’s going to launch should help somewhat. He follows by noting that GM’s next-gen mild hybrid system will work with RWD cars and predicts that we’ll see a 2.0T hybrid Camaro by 2011 or so. This would dovetail neatly with the first phase of the new CAFE regs, and we’re sure GM would find a way to engineer a hypothetical turbo/hybrid’s fuel economy numbers so they’d play nice within Uncle Sam’s rules. Great.

The issue with all this talk of four-cylinder turbos and hybrids for a muscle car (despite attempts to redefine the class and reset expectations) is that everyone conveniently overlooks just how good the existing V8 is. In the 2008 Corvette Coupe, the big bad 6.2L LS3 is rated at 16 city/26 hwy. Hardly a guzzler in the traditional sense, the V8′s rating isn’t that far off from the direct-injected Ecotec turbo. Furthermore, the V8′s fuel economy comes with 430 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque. Those are numbers befitting a muscle car like a Camaro. Who’s to say a direct-injected, LS-family V8 with efficiency tech like hybridization and/or cylinder deactivation wouldn’t be just as effective at meeting the federal fuel economy requirements that begin taking effect a few years from now? You could potentially satisfy the government-created CAFE gods without giving the customers who want actual, traditional muscle the finger in the process. Yes, the consensus seems to be that smaller engines will be a necessity across the board in the new CAFE era, but let’s not summarily ignore the bigger ones just because they’re big.
