The closest BMW has ever come to having an off-road vehicle was sticking its V8 engines into Range Rovers. Even it’s “Sport Activity Vehicle”, the X5, rarely sees time off the pavement and sticks to hauling kids to school and soccer practice. Hartge has set out to change that with an off-road program for Bimmer SUVs, the latest of which is an X3 dubbed the “Hunter”. The Bavarian tuner gives the mini-ute increased ground clearance with longer springs and shocks as well as spacers up front. An underbody stainless steel skid plate, shortened axle ratio, and automatic differential locks on both axles improve its exploring capabilities. All-terrain tires are a must, and they are mounted on Hartge’s lightweight 18-inch “Classic 2″ wheels. For the true enthusiast, Hartge offers washable seat covers and a “green look” interior. We doubt Land Rover and Jeep owners will be flocking to their local BMW dealership for a trade-in, but it’s definitely one of the more capable off-road BMWs we’ve seen. The press release is after the jump, and you can view the X3 Hunter in action in the gallery below.

Motoring File is reporting that the upcoming MINI CUV dubbed Crossman will share elements with the BMW X1 SUV that itself is based on the 1-Series. You heard that right: the MINI Crossman will have parts from the 1-Series, although we don’t know which ones will be crossing over just yet. The cross-use of components will save time to market and production costs for both brands. Hopefully the strategy will also keep both new utility vehicles around the same price as their competitors, unlike the BMW 1-series.
Recent spy shots show the Crossman to have the appearance of a raised Clubman, but while the test vehicle only contains two doors, the production version is actually expected to sport four. It will also be larger in every dimension over a standard Clubman, so the pics we keep seeing of a raised Clubman like the one above don’t really tell the whole story. Also, don’t worry, as the component sharing does entail the inclusion of an AWD system adapted especially for the MINI’s configuration.

As the 2009 Corvette ZR1 was unveiled on the very same day that President Bush signed into law a new energy bill, the obvious question is where do we go from here? The most prominent part of the bill was the first increase in corporate average fuel economy requirements in over two decades. By 2020, most manufacturers will have to achieve a sales weighted average fuel economy of 35 mpg for their fleets. Note that was “most” and not “all” manufacturers, a subject we’ll return to in a moment.
At the press preview of the new LS9 engine, GM Powertrain VP Tom Stephens was asked about gas guzzler taxes and how the energy bill would affect the future of cars like the ZR1. Stephens acknowledged that the ZR1 would have a gas guzzler tax, although the final mileage numbers weren’t done yet. As for the future, it’s too early to tell. In the past, the death of performance cars has been predicted repeatedly and here we are at a new high water mark. Corvette VLE Tom Wallace said at the car’s debut that the ZR1 would last at least through the C6 model cycle. No decisions have been made about the C7 and beyond. Keep reading after the jump.

The 1-Series has officially joined BMW’s line up in the United States, having finally been added to the brand’s official website. Along with its place among the Ultimate Driving Machines online, the 1-Series also gets officially pricing, which turns out to be exactly what we thought it would be. The 135i will have an MSRP of $34,900 plus a $775 charge for delivery and all the whatnots involved with a purchasing a car. The 128i, meanwhile, will start at $28,600 and carry an identical $775 charge for destination and delivery.
The 128i is powered by BMW’s 3.0L inline-six producing 230 horsepower, while the top shelf 135i is motivated by the superlative twin-turbo 3.0L inline-six producing 300 HP. Both are, of course, rear-wheel drive, small, and relatively light weight at around 3,200 lbs. – the purest coupes from BMW we’ve seen in a while. We optioned up a 135i with everything and arrived at an MSRP of $48,995 (that’s it above – how you like the Cashmere Silver Metallic?). Frankly, that’s ridiculously expensive for a car this size, regardless of what wheels are being driven or the engine under the hood. Do you think they’re worth the high asking price? Answer in our poll below.

BMW’s big Detroit debut will be the production X6 Sports Activity Coupe (unsurprisingly, BMW avoids the somewhat unbecoming “SAC” acronym), which will be arriving in US showrooms sometime during the second quarter of 2008. When it does, buyers get two flavors to choose from. The xDrive50i is powered by a new twin-turbo, direct-injected 4.4L V8 pumping out 400-horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. The xDrive35i, meanwhile, gets the automaker’s acclaimed 300-hp TT inline six-cylinder. Dynamic Performance Control is a standard feature that can direct torque to either rear wheel, further aiding steering in both dry weather and sloppier conditions. Design-wise, the production X6 looks pretty much just like the hybrid-equipped concept version we saw earlier this year. Basically, it’s a larger “X” model with a coupe roofline. Not bad, as SUVs go, but the sloping roof obviously forces owners to compromise some space in the name of style. Still, the driver and three friends can stow their golf clubs in back while riding in comfort. Interior appointments are typical BMW fare, meaning they’re quite nice. If you’ve been in a modern Bimmer, you know precisely what to expect. The X6 is no slug, either, with a manufacturer-claimed 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds for the turbo V8 model. We’ll have plenty more to say after we check it out firsthand in a few weeks.

After centuries of counting on eight reindeer (unless there is fog), it appears as though Santa Claus has instead opted for the internal combustion engine. To traverse the sometimes tight airways around metropolitan areas, good ol’ Saint Nick decided the nimble nature of the BMW 1-Series was best-fitted to do the job.
The boys and girls of team Bimmer have decided that the best way to sell the 1-Series on their home turf during the holiday season is to involve the biggest commercial icon of Christmas. As you can see above, Santa is haulin’ … presents, and the smallest four-wheeler from the Bavarian Motor Werks is leading the way. St. Nick is going so fast, all the vowels have left the billboard. If this doesn’t keep awake the children of Hamburg, we don’t know what will. Imagine trying to sleep when every car that drives by makes you think Santa is pulling into your driveway. Heck, we’re sure there are a lot of parents hoping to get the little BMW coupe for Christmas, too.

Dinan, renowned tuners of all things from the propeller people, have finally decided to offer an ECU upgrade for owners of BMW’s delectable 335i. The reflashed upgrade necessitates the installation of either BMW’s or Dinan’s oil cooler, but once the Bimmer’s brain is reprogrammed, throttle response is sharpened, the top-speed governor is removed and power levels jump to 384 hp at 5,700 rpm and a kidney pummeling 421 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,300 rpm.
While other companies have been at it for a while (ahem, Vishnu), the Dinan crew is able to offer something that other tuners haven’t: a warranty that coincides with BMW’s own. The cost, however, is steep, coming in at $1,999 for the reflash alone. Piece of mind – and tuning products for BMWs overall – doesn’t come cheap, but for those who want to extract the twin-turbo’d inline-six’s full potential, this may be one of the best mods to date.
