Über Crossover: Hamann’s 670 horsepower Tycoon Evo M to debut in Geneva

Arquivado em BMW, Others por admin em 23-02-2010

Last year Hamann introduced the BMW X6-based Tycoon, and while the widebody kit gave the crossover a mean look, it was only backed up by a mere 360 horsepower from the twin-turbo inline-six. That horsepower deficiency will soon be resolved as Hamann plans to introduce the Tycoon Evo M at the Geneva Motor Show next week. Under the hood is the X6 M’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that only needs a high-flow exhaust system and a reprogrammed ECU to reach 670 horsepower and 576 pound-feet of torque. Hamann claims that the extra 115 horsepower is good for a 4.2 second sprint to 62 mph and a top speed of 186 mph.

Along with the additional power, Hamann has also developed a revised widebody kit to fit the X6 M. The fenders have been widened 60mm, and LED running lights are now featured prominently on the front fascia. Additional upgrades include lightweight 23-inch forged wheels and aluminum and carbon fiber interior accessories. We’ll have live photos from the Geneva show floor in just a few short days, but until then you can browse the high-res gallery below and read more details in the press release after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE:

HAMANN-Motorsport, the renowned specialist for exquisite refinements of BMW-automobiles shows its latest developments on the 80th Geneva Motor Show. The masculine show-piece on the HAMANN exhibition stand with 200 square metres is the world premiere of the 670 hp/493kW strong and 300 km/h fast TYCOON EVO M based on the BMW X6 M.

The TYCOON EVO M – powerful appearance with striking design

Already the shape of the TYCOON EVO M with its impressive broad built gives a good hint of what is to be discovered. Mainly responsible for that are the front and the rear wing extensions made of light composite materials. These let the body expand by impressive 60 millimetres. Additionally, the HAMANN designers enhanced the sides with the newly designed side skirts. The distinctive hallmark of the front is the apron with the four striking LED daytime running lights. But the body set does not only emphasise the appearance, enlarged air inlets in the front and the carbon bonnet allow an optimised air ventilation of the engine compartment. At the X6 M rear, HAMANN also replaces the original skirt with an own development. This makes room for the earthy sounding sports exhaust system with the centrally positioned double end pipes. The rear view of the TYCOON EVO M is perfected with beautifully designed rear- and roof spoilers. All of those components produce a low-swirling airflow over the vehicle silhouette and render additional downthrust.

Rich performance enhancement thanks to optimised exhaust gas flow

In addition to the spectacular shape of the TYCOON EVO M the HAMANN engine department added a powerful performance enhancement for the serial engine. The most significant component for the performance enhancement and responsible for the dynamic and earthy sound of the TYCOON EVO M is the stainless steel high performance exhaust system with metal catalysers. A newly programmed map for the serial motronic completes the upgrade and suspending the speed limit of 250 km/h allows unrestrained driving pleasures.

As a result of the modifications, the X6 M now offers 670 hp / 493 kW at 6,000 r.p.m. and 780 Nm torque at 1,500 – 5,650 r.p.m. This is a surplus of 115 hp and 100 Nm compared to the serial version. Therefore, the all-wheel accelerated from 0 to 100 in only 4,2 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 300 km/h.

Varying rim designs and sizes

Specially adjusted to the increased requirements of the TYCOON EVO M, the refining specialist presents varying wheel designs and sizes. A highlight concerning styling and technology is the rim model UNIQUE FORGED ANODIZED produced in most modern forged technology. The dynamic shape of the delicate, anodised cross spokes does not only lead to a dynamic and striking look, but also results in an even weight distribution and therefore guarantees higher bearing loads. HAMANN offers the 23-inch wheel in the dimensions 11.0 x 23 at the front- and 12.0 x 23 at the rear axle, combined with wheels measuring 315/25 R 23.
The light alloy wheels are especially emphasised with the HAMANN lowering kit. Progressively coiled springs at the front axle and a modification kit for the rear axle thereby lower the centre of gravity of the Sports Utility Vehicle by approx. 40 millimetres.

Most noble interior applications underline the motor sports atmosphere

In addition to the existing factory-provided interior, HAMANN offers accessories made of black-anodised aluminium in combination with carbon applications. Pedals and foot rest render motor sports air and perfectly match the 12-part HAMANN decoration set made of carbon fibre. An three-spoke sports steering wheel additionally render the TYCOON EVO M a dynamic overall appearance. For the luggage compartment in the back of the X6 M, HAMANN offers an elegant and practical boot mat with diamond-shaped decorations and an embroidered logo.

Chicago 2010: BMW ends three year Alpina B7 drought for 2011

Arquivado em BMW, Others por admin em 11-02-2010

Not only will BMW not make an M7, but they even stopped making the incredibly-close-to-an-M Alpina B7 a few years ago. That car could hold its head high against competitors like the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, Audi S8 and Bentley Flying Spur Speed, with extra horsepower, refined handling and unique looks setting it apart from standard 7 series fare. Sadly, that car was only produced from 2007-2008 and since ‘09 there’s been nothing to fill the void.

Today in Chicago we saw a bright light on the horizon. Just in time to do battle with the upcoming Jaguar XJR, Porsche Panamera Turbo and the like, BMW unveiled the 2011 Alpina B7. Functional front and rear fascias and spoilers, 20-spoke, 21-inch Alpina wheels, hand-stitched “Lavalina” leather and Alpina badges and sills differentiate this from lesser 7s.

Underhood there’s a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 500 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque – 100 hp and 66 lb-ft better than the 750i, with a 0-60 dash of 4.5 seconds. Available in short wheelbase for $122,875 or extended wheelbase at $126,775, it’s a helluva car for helluva lot scratch. Press release after the jump and live gallery below.

PRESS RELEASE

The 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 Sedan

BMW returns legendary ALPINA badge to North America.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 8, 2010… BMW of North America announced today that the 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan will join BMW’s North American product range as the most dynamic 7 Series model. The BMW ALPINA B7 represents the second generation of ALPINA automobiles based on the BMW 7 Series to be offered in the US. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly interpreted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 will again set the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, technology, luxury and exclusivity.

Yielding exquisite levels of power and torque from the twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8, and in conjunction with the electronically-adjustable suspension with active roll stabilization, the new B7 promises to offer a spectrum of driving experiences so broad as to be unheard of in this class of automobiles. The evolution of the traditional 20-spoke 21″ ALPINA CLASSIC wheels underline the fresh design language found throughout the B7 and impart it a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

Both short- and long-wheelbase models will be offered. The BMW ALPINA B7 will make its North American premiere at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show in February, and go on sale at authorized BMW Centers in Spring of 2010. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

ALPINA and BMW. A history of synergy.

ALPINA – a name famous in Europe and the wider world for putting a particular performance accent on BMWs, though not yet so well-known in North America. BMW – a name famous all over the world for motor vehicles of performance, quality, luxury and safety.

The two companies, both at home in the German state of Bavaria, have a long history of working together to produce special BMW automobiles. Burkard Bovensiepen, son of the founder of ALPINA Business Machines and an enthusastic racing driver/engineer, began his automotive career path in 1961 by developing a dual-carburetor setup for the just-introduced BMW 1500 sedan. It was a predictive beginning: to take an already fine-performing BMW (which also just happened to be a practical sedan) and making it perform even better.

By 1964, BMW had officially recognized ALPINA’s contribution to BMW performance. Not long thereafter, Burkard Bovensiepen founded the ALPINA company – ALPINA Burkard Bovensiepen KG – that continues today, creating special versions of BMW automobiles that offer a particular brand of performance for discriminating auto enthusiasts. Yet outside the circle of dedicated BMW enthusiasts, ALPINA has kept a low profile in North America. In addition to racing versions of BMWs, ALPINA has developed a progression of BMW-based cars based on 3, 5, 6, 8, Z4 and Z8 models and offered them on a limited-production basis. ALPINA is located in the small Bavarian city of Buchloe, some 50 miles southwest of Munich, BMW’s headquarters

2011 BMW Alpina B7 comes in two spicy, pricy flavors

Arquivado em BMW, Others por admin em 03-02-2010

Problem: BMW will not make a M7. Despite making the M5 Wagon and the X6 M, the boys from Bavaria want no part of the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG, S65 AMG, Audi S8, (soon) Jaguar XJR, Porsche Panamera Turbo or Bentley Flying Spur Speed market. Odd, yes, especially from the company that discovered a new segment between the 5 Series wagon and the X5. Anyhow, no M7 for you.

Solution: the Alpina B7, as its an M7 in everything but name. Some of you might want to argue the point that no way is the Alpina B7 good enough to wear a vaunted M badge. To which we say… you might have a point. So think of it as the 750CSI. Either way, this here new Alpina B7 is going to be a pretty worthy competitor to all them big, fancy super sedans up above. Here’s why.

From the outside the changes include front and rear fascias and spoilers that not only set the B7 apart from lesser 7 Series but are functional. The front spoiler provides 30% more downforce while the rear tacks on an additional 15%. Not only that, but the front spoiler provides specific cooling to new transmission and oil coolers. Also impossible to miss are the 20-spoke, 21-inch Alpina wheels. Inside nearly every surface gets covered with hand-stitched “Lavalina” leather (whatever that might be) and Alpina badges. The areas not swathed in Lavalina get treated with Alcantara. There’s also a heated steering wheel and illuminated blue Aplina door sills.

Of course, what’s underneath matters most. Specifically the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 gets pumped up to 500 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque (as opposed to the 750i’s 400 hp and 450 pounds of twist). The press release notes that all that torque is, “available across an unusually broad engine range, from 3,000 to 4,750 rpm,” which is either wool-over-the-eyes PR hype, or a typo. We’ll go with typo, as the regular strength 750i makes its 450 pound-feet from 1,800 to 4,500 rpm. Either way, the Alpina B7 can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. And now, the kicker: the short wheelbase B7 costs $122,875 and the extended wheelbase B7 will set you back $126,775. Both prices are before the $875 destination fee. Press release after the jump.

Pricing Announced for 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 Sedans in North America

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 1, 2010… BMW announced the pricing today for the 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan, which will join BMW’s North American product range as the most dynamic 7 Series model. As the second generation of ALPINA automobiles based on the BMW 7 Series to be offered in the US, the 2011 BMW ALPINA B7 sedan will retail for $122,875 (standard wheelbase) and $126,775 (extended wheelbase). Both prices include $875 Destination & Handling. The first BMW ALPINA B7 was offered as a limited edition for the 2007 and 2008 model years. Newly interpreted and based on the current BMW 7 Series platform, the B7 will again set the benchmark in terms of performance, refinement, and technology.

The evolution of the traditional 20-spoke 21″ ALPINA Classic wheels underlines the fresh design language found throughout the B7 and imparts to it a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

Both standard- and long-wheelbase models will be offered. The BMW ALPINA B7 will make its North American debut at the Chicago International Auto Show and will go on sale at authorized BMW Centers in Spring of 2010.

The B7 sedan is equipped with BMW’s twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter, all-aluminum, High Precision Direct Injection V-8 engine which has been enhanced by ALPINA and is capable of producing 500 (373kW) horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700Nm) of torque. This rear-wheel drive performance/luxury Sedan achieves 0-60 mph in 4.5 sec. With maximum torque available across an unusually broad engine range, from 3,000 to 4,750 rpm, the B7 accelerates effortlessly from virtually any speed.

The B7 sedan is finished with ALPINA aerodynamic developments, including front and rear spoilers which not only enhance the appearance but also improve stability and performance at high speeds. In true “form-follows-function” fashion, the ALPINA front integrates the fresh-air requirements of the transmission and engine oil coolers, which are separated out of the main cooler module for improved efficiency. The spoilers reduce lift at the front by 30% and rear by15%. The exhaust system’s two double tailpipes are seamlessly integrated into the rear bumper. The newest evolution of the traditional 20-spoke ALPINA Classic wheels gives the B7 a distinctive appearance and powerful stance.

The interior of the B7 sedan features ALPINA blue illuminated door sill trims, Switchtronic heated steering wheel in hand-stitched Lavalina leather, Alcantara headliner, Heads Up display, and the Black-Panel LCD screen instrument cluster branded with ALPINA. Hand-stitched Lavalina leather also covers the dashboard, door panels, center console, multi-contour front seats with heating and cooling, and heated rear seats.

The full complement of BMW 7 Series exterior colors remains available, in addition to the signature ALPINA Blue metallic paint.

Report: 2011 BMW X6 getting single turbo N55, eight-speed automatic

Arquivado em BMW, Others por admin em 28-01-2010

BMW has officially announced changes for its 2011 BMW X6, and the big news is that the German automaker will swap out its twin-turbo N54 inline-six in this sport utility for the new twin-scroll single turbo N55 mill, just like it did in the new 5 Series. The move continues BMW’s drive toward simplifying its engine options while at the same time providing X6 owners with stronger acceleration and increased efficiency. BMW claims the N55 matches the twin-scroll N54’s power numbers while also cutting weight from the engine bay. And since this bubbly crossover weighs in at a rotund 4,900 pounds, we’re thinking every pound lost is a good thing.

The twin-scroll inline-six will produce 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque in the X6, six more ponies and five fewer lb-ft than the outgoing twin turbo model. Both the X6 35i and X6 50i will also receive ZF’s eight speed automatic transmission for the 2011 model year. The eight forward gears will even further improve efficiency while also deliver smoother shifts.

Report: Details on 2011 BMW “M1″ trickle out

Arquivado em BMW, Coupes, Others por admin em 06-01-2010

A BMW 1 Series Coupe, tweaked by the company’s M-Technik division, is reportedly under development for UK release in mid-2011. Destined to slot beneath the M3 Coupe, the smaller 1 Series Coupe is said to feature a modified twin-turbocharged six-cylinder packing 350 horsepower. The aluminum engine will be mated to a standard six-speed dual-clutch gearbox with an electronically-controlled rear M differential. With a curb weight of just over 3,300 pounds and easily making more than 310 lb-ft of torque, the newest M-car will breeze past 60 mph in well under five seconds without breaking a sweat (for comparison’s sake, BMW claims the 135i takes 5.2 seconds but publications like Car and Driver have hit 60 mph in the 4.7-second range)

The 1 Series Motorsport variant will reportedly retain the current car’s standard MacPherson struts up front and the multi-link rear configuration, but the division’s engineers have fitted firmer springs and dampers (and new bushings) to improve handling. Lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels complete the hardware package. Cosmetically, the so-called “M1″ will wear an M division body kit with a new front spoiler, flared wheel arches, larger side sills, a rear spoiler and an aggressive rear valance with four M-signature chrome exhaust tips.

The name is still not finalized. Understandably, BMW is hesitant to quickly slap the “M1″ label on the rear decklid as that name originally adorned the company’s legendary road supercar in the late 1970s. Destined to become the M division’s most affordable model, we really don’t care what BMW calls it… just send it to our shores.

2011 BMW 5 Series tuned by Racing Dynamics

Arquivado em BMW, Others por admin em 04-01-2010

You can’t buy the 2011 BMW 5 Series yet, but German tuner Racing Dynamics knows what it’s going to do to the car when you can. Opt for the 535i and you’ll take delivery of a sedan turned into an R35, pulled by a turbocharged six that’s got a 104-horsepower bump to 410 along with 385 pound-feet of torque. It will get to 60 miles per hour nearly a second faster than the standard 535i.

But if you can, why not take the R50S? That’s a 550i taken from 407 ponies and boosted up to 620 horsepower. Controlling that oomph will be a Racing Dynamics sport suspension, locking rear differential, and a brake system with slotted discs that can handle 800 degrees Celsius. Making it sound good will be a new exhaust, and making it look good will be a minimal bodykit featuring a pair of dual pipes and 21-inch forged wheels.

REPORT: FIA President Jean Todt to push forward with green F1 technology

Arquivado em BMW, Ferrari, Motorsports, Others por admin em 30-12-2009

Says Jean Todt, newly-appointed president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), “I am convinced that we absolutely must reflect the environment with new technologies.” With that statement, it would appear that at least some of the direction of former FIA president Max Mosley will stay intact.

Mosley had championed a number of green efforts at the top run of the motorsports ladder, not the least of which were hybrid drivetrains in the form of the controversial Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). Though most teams dropped their KERS units in 2009 and none plan to use them in 2010, the technology will likely make the transition to road use within the next few years, probably starting with BMW and Ferrari.

Other changes designed to make F1 racing more accessible to new teams may include spending caps and budget restraints, though it would seem that may clash with the desire to be more environmentally friendly. We’ll be watching.

Rumormill: BMW ActiveHybrid 5 concept could debut in Geneva

Arquivado em BMW, Others, hybrid por admin em 21-12-2009

Late last month, BMW officially revealed its next generation 5 series sedan in Munich and the opening salvo of powertrains includes the usual array of gas and diesel six- and eight-cylinder engines. However, with the recent launches of the ActiveHybrid X6 and 7, no one expects it to stay that way for long. BMW officials have acknowledged its intent to expand hybrid capability to other models going forward and, as the next redesign, the 5 would be the logical choice.

We’re not sure if the new 5 will show up at the Detroit show next month, but it should appear by the Geneva Motor Show in March. At that time, the ActiveHybrid 5 will probably debut as a concept with the production version possibly arriving by the end of 2010. At this point, it appears unlikely that we’ll see any more BMW applications of the two-mode hybrid system used in the X6 (with the possible exception of the X5). Instead, the modular mild hybrid from the 7 is the likely candidate since it delivers much of the benefit at a lower cost and smaller packaging size.

REPORT: BMW M division pushing for hardcore version of next 1 Series

Arquivado em BMW, Others por admin em 19-11-2009

Successive generations of the BMW M3 have come a long way since the original, with a skyrocketing curb weight and an ever-climbing price tag. The new M3 GTS may have done a lot to counter the former, although sadly it only further escalated the latter. But enthusiasts take heart, because someone’s on the case. Fortunately, that someone is Dr. Kay Segler, head of Munich’s famous M division.

According to reports, Segler and his team are pushing the beancounters to give them the authorization to make an M-tuned 1 Series. While the twin-turbo 135i is touted by many as a closer successor to the original M3 than the current M3, he feels there’s more that can be done.

Unfortunately, Segler is talking about the next-generation 1 Series, so even if approved, it’d be a while before any future M-tuned 1 hits the road. If and when it does, however, it could take aim at the Audi S3 with a 330-horsepower version of the Bavarian automaker’s new TwinPower engine. As for naming schemes, they may have to get a little creative to avoid confusion with the original M1 supercar.

ATT Autotechnik drops BMW 335i Doppelturbo-Cabriolet

Arquivado em BMW, Convertibles, Others por admin em 17-11-2009

This is the problem: According to ATT Autotechnik — the M3 Convertible is so good, why bother with any other 3 Series convertibles? And they have a point… until now! Meet ATT’s new Doppleturbo-Cabriolet. What they’ve done is to take a regular BMW 335i convertible and make it quicker. How much quicker?

The regular 335i is rated at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque (though, of course, those numbers are underrated a bit). The Doppleturbo on the other hand makes 356 hp and 388 lb-ft of torque. A little less power than the M3 (414 hp) but nearly 25% more torque (the M3 makes just 300 lb-ft). You also get a stainless steel exhaust and big, good looking 20-inch, 20-spoke wheels (though some more brakes would be nice, at least visually speaking). But is it any good?

Well, in the past we’ve seen BMW tuners do the whole less-horses-more-torques thing with good results. Anybody remember Alpina’s take on the Z8? Essentially, rather than use the E39’s high-strung 5.0-liter V8, Alpina bored out a 4.4-liter BMW V8 to 4.8-liters. The results were 375 hp (vs. 394 hp) and 383 lb-ft of twist (vs. 368 lb-ft) and according to all lucky enough to drive the car, a much preferable grand tourer to the “stock” car. Could ATT Autotechnik have worked the same magic with the Doppelturbo? Maybe. Awkwardly translated press release after the jump.
[Source: att-tec.com]

PRESS RELEASE:

Doppelturbo-Cabriolet - by ATT Autotechnik

Let’s face it, in the history of BMW there has been no better BMW 3 series convertible, besides the M3. If you like to drive fast and topless, here you are seated just right. The dual turbo six-cylinder car from ATT out of Rastatt convinces primarily through its increased engine power to spectacular 362 hp and 536 Nm.

The tuner offers two power enhancements. At power level I (2.355,00 Euro) the 335i achieves 345 hp and 481 Nm by the use of an additional controller. At power level II (4.130,00 Euro) the bi turbo achieves entire 362 hp and 526 Nm - therefore accountable is not just the additional controller but also the stainless steel sport exhaust system, which adds to the ideal output effect.

Big ATT TEC LeMans 20″wheels emphazise the futuristic appearance of the ambitious athlete. The aluminum rims in the dimension 8,5×20″ and 10×20″ with high performance tires from Michelin “Pilot Sport 2″ size 245/30 ZR20 and 285/25 ZR20 are worth 3.475,00 Euro, mounting and balancing included.

New in the range are the design fender in M3-optics. For 1.843,00 Euro you can get these from ATT already with original M3-louver, boxes, mounting accessories and LED blinker. For additional 597,00 Euro the fender can be ordered in Rastatt in car body color.
