Chrysler’s new hybrid SUVs score a 20/22 mpg from the EPA

Filed under Chrysler, Dodge, green, SUVs 17-10-2008

Those who have had a hard look at their needs and still come to the conclusion that a full-size SUV would fit the bill officially have a new option. The Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango hybrids are now on sale and the EPA has determined that the pair have the best fuel economy of any such vehicles on the U.S. market. The Chrysler duo are officially rated at 20 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the open road. Chrysler has opted to offer the Two-Mode hybrid trucks only with all-wheel-drive while GM’s similarly powered Tahoe/Yukon can be had in rear- or all-wheel-drive. Comparing like configurations, both brands get an equal 20 mpg in stop and go traffic. Once you get up to cruising speed, the Chryslers pull out ahead, topping the GM SUVs by 2 mpg. At about $45K, the Chrysler/Dodges provide what may be an even more important advantage over the competition. An AWD Tahoe will run you $53,000. You don’t really give up anything in terms of equipment or features for that price difference, so it’s worth checking out. We sampled it ourselves this summer and came away with a fairly positive impression.

Cadillac manager appointed HUMMER CEO

General Motors seems pretty anxious to see its HUMMER division go away. In fact, it’s called the sale “urgent,” and recent actions appear to bolster that claim.

James E. Taylor, the man who had formerly been helping lead Cadillac back to its “standard of the world” past-glory, has just been appointed the new CEO of the HUMMER brand. GM says that this upper-management move “marks a progression in the ongoing strategic review process.” We read that to mean Taylor will help ready the brand for a quick sale. It also sounds like HUMMER’s general manager, Martin Walsh, will attempt to smooth over any issues that the brand’s sale will have with its current dealerships. Mark McNabb will oversee Taylor on his new assignment and will also shoulder the burden that’s left at Caddy now that the brand has lost the man who had been at the helm. We’ve pasted the press release after the break if you’d like to try and decipher it for yourself.

PRESS RELEASE:

Taylor Named New Chief Executive Officer of HUMMER

DETROIT – As part of the ongoing business and strategic review of the HUMMER brand, General Motors is revising its HUMMER leadership structure. Effective immediately, James E. Taylor is appointed to the new position of chief executive officer, HUMMER.

Taylor, 52, formerly Cadillac general manager, is responsible for the future strategy and current business of HUMMER worldwide. This move marks a progression in the ongoing strategic review process and establishes the lead management structure for HUMMER going forward. Martin Walsh, currently general manager of HUMMER, will team with Taylor on the transition and ongoing dealer relations, and then will move to another assignment that will be announced soon.

Taylor has been Cadillac general manager since 2004, and even prior to that he was a key architect in Cadillac’s design and technology resurgence. As the global Vehicle Line Executive for Cadillac, Taylor led the development of a series of new models – beginning with the Cadillac CTS — that ushered in a new and distinctive generation of dramatically designed, high performing vehicles. Taylor joined GM in 1980 and since has held a number of business and marketing leadership roles, including those at Saturn, Adam Opel, Worldwide Purchasing and GM Truck.

Taylor reports to Mark C. McNabb, North America vice president, Cadillac/Premium Channel. McNabb, 46, joined GM in 2008 to assume leadership of GM’s premium brands, Cadillac, HUMMER and Saab USA.

“By creating a new and more comprehensive leadership position for HUMMER with Jim Taylor as the top executive, we are bolstering the strategic review process and the brand,” said Mark LaNeve, GMNA vice president of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. “At the same time, we’re sharpening our focus on Cadillac as GM’s flagship brand in the global luxury marketplace under Mark McNabb’s leadership.”

KTM X-Bow captures GT4 Sports Light championship

KTM has performed well during the X-Bow’s campaign in the European GT4 Sports Light series, winning the championship in its inaugural season. In fact, the KTM X-Bow claimed the top three spots at the end of the 18-round series, and in the process, KTM’s first four-wheeled street racer managed to beat out a slew of Donkervoorts and Lotuses. German X-Bow driver Christopher Haase piloted the KaTooM to a number of victories and won the driver’s championship in the process. Somewhat amazingly, the angular little orange and black roadster was even able to pick on much larger and more powerful competition, like Aston Martins, Ford Mustangs and Corvettes.

We think it’s fair to call the X-Bow a success for KTM, which now looks forward to bigger and better things. Up next is an even faster version of its racer as well as a range of city cars and off-roaders. Lest we should forget where the company’s roots are, there are plenty of new sporting two-wheelers in the pipeline as well.

PRESS RELEASE:

KTM X-Bow races to inaugural Sports Light championship

The KTM X-Bow secured a sensational one-two-three championship finish in the debut season of the Sports Light category of the GT4 European Cup.

German X-Bow driver Christopher Haase was crowned Sports Light champion after claiming first place in class in the final race of the season at Nogaro earlier this month. Team mates Denis Retera and Catharina Felser finished second and third for the season respectively, ahead of Sports Light entrants driving Donkervoorts and Lotuses.

The Reiter Engineering-run KTM X-Bows dominated proceedings throughout the 18-round championship, often claiming finishes ahead of more powerful ‘senior’ GT4 Aston Martins, Ford Mustangs and BMW Z4Ms. True to KTM’s ‘Ready to Race’ philosophy, the X-Bows competed in near-standard road specification, with minor revisions made only to meet FIA safety regulations.

Nissan recalls 200,000 vehicles over passenger air bag issue

Filed under Infiniti, Nissan, Others 16-10-2008

Nissan is recalling 200,000 vehicles due to a faulty sensor system that could affect the car’s passenger sid airbag. The problem is described as an issue with an electrical component that could interfere with the sensor system, which could then prevent the side airbag from deploying in certain circumstances. We gather from the report on Recall.gov that the sensor telling the car whether or not someone’s riding shotgun could malfunction, and in the event of a crash the car could assume no one’s sitting there at not deploy the passenger airbag. Most of the vehicles affected are 2007 or 2008 Nissan Altimas, tallying over 140,000 units of that model in all. Other models affected include ’07 and ’08 examples of the Infiniti EX35, G35 Sedan, G37 coupe and the Nissan 350Z, Rogue and Murano. The Japanese automaker claims that there have been no injuries as a result of the defect, but apparently it was deemed significant enough to pay for a recall and be safe today rather than sorry tomorrow. Owners of an affected Nissan vehicle can call 1-800-647-7261 and Infiniti owners can dial 1-800-662-6200 for more information, as dealers are able to test the system and replace the passenger-side seat cushion where the offending hardware is located.

Rendered or Real? 2010 Toyota Prius

Filed under hybrid, Others, Toyota 16-10-2008

We’re far from convinced that the image above is the 2010 Toyota Prius, but judging by the front detail pic and the interior shot, it could be the most accurate portrayal we’ll see before it’s unveiling in Detroit this January.

The pic, published over at PriusChat by bossdowner, shows a restyled front end that takes a few cues from recent ToMoCo offerings, including the bulbous badge housing, deeper air dam and recessed fog lamps. The headlights are a nice touch, but we still haven’t warmed up to the L-shaped design originally shown on the new Maxima and forthcoming 370Z.

As for the interior, it’s a sea of bland in a dark gray plastic that would make the Germans proud. However, we dig the raised center console with an integrated pass-through to access the 12-volt outlet.

Cadillac mulling V8 diesel for CTS

Filed under Cadillac, GM, hybrid, Sedans/Saloons 15-10-2008

According to MotorTrend, General Motors is considering fitting its 4.5-liter Duramax V8 Turbodiesel inside the Cadillac CTS sedan as a stepping-stone between the standard V6-equipped CTS and the barn-burning CTS-V.

The report contends that the Duramax V8 would be an easy fit inside the confines of the CTS’ engine bay with the addition of the CTS-V’s bulging hood. The dual-overhead cam, four-valve diesel V8 puts out 310 hp and a tire decimating 520 lb.-ft. of torque and GM already has a transmission that can handle the grunt. The oilburner currently meets the tougher 2010 emissions standards which would allow it to be sold in all 50 states, and with a reported 20-25% increased fuel economy over the V8 model, the diesel CTS could provide some competition to similar offerings from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. According to MT, the amount of modifications would be minimal and the addition of the CTS diesel would help to boost GM’s CAFE certification to meet the stricter 35 mpg requirements in 2020.

BREAKING: Layoffs and executive shuffles at Tesla Motors

Filed under Convertibles, green, hybrid, Others, Sports/GTs 15-10-2008

Tesla is now on its fourth CEO in just 12 months as the fledgling all-electric automaker has announced today that chief fund-raiser, architect and Chairman Elon Musk will take up the mantle from current CEO Ze’ev Drori. Early this morning Valleywag reported that Tesla would be firing up to 100 of its staff and that Drori might be leaving. A call to Tesla SVP Darryl Siry revealed that the story was not entirely accurate. Drori is not leaving the company, but will move over to become Vice Chairman. Exactly what that means is not entirely known at this point, although clearly Musk intends to take a more hands on role now that his Space-X rocket finally managed to get into orbit. Tesla is also laying off some staff, although the extent of lay offs is unknown at this time. Siry promised an official announcement sometime this morning, but we’re still waiting.
